Hi All,

after some advice on a great melbourne restaurant. Think bucket list type, similar to tetsuya's in sydney. I will be in melb this weekend and want to go somewhere great before i head o/s for a few years...

One would be Vue Du Monde. I haven't eaten there yet, but it is widely regarded. Another would have been Jacques Reymond, but you're a couple of weeks too late, as it changed in December.

Both have/had 3 chefs hats.

Vue de Monde will give you that big, Sydney-style night out but as we do it so well here, why not go for something more "Melbourne" and visit Attica? It's Melbourne's highest rated restaurant in the respected "World's 50 Best" list (coming in at 21) and yet it's in a nondescript suburban location in Ripponlea. Ben Shewry and his team just turn out wonderfully unpretentious dishes night after night.

How could you possibly hate that the menu comes out on a meat-tray and that the waiters know how each cut should be cooked... that place is heaven!

Try something new and cool rather than the old stalwarts! Melbourne food thrashes Syd :)

Tonka
Chin chin

A lot of the top restaurants close between Christmas/newyear and Mid January so check each venue.

My takes are either the Press Club (not tried it since it has gone 100% greek food), Radii at the Park Hyatt, or the Flower Drum.

I haven't been there for a while but I did enjoy the food last time

Frame setup

I found Flower Drum to be average to be honest. Had a nicer meal at Silks the following night.

MoVida comes up but you can get that in Sydney now - even at the airport!

But out the right picks (provided you can get bookings last minute) is Vue De Monde and Attica.

Possibly Nobu too. I had an excellent meal at Grossi Florentino about 18 months ago.

Tonka and coughulus Inc have been on my to do list for a little while.

Good luck getting a table at Vue or Attica this late notice!

Ezard is great. Movida is very 'Melbourne' these days. coughulus Inc (no reservations so if you're there early you won't have to wait too long)

We have Black by Ezard in Sydney - but I think the food focus is different? Great meal though!

Breakfasts:
Liar Liar
Mart (corn cakes)
Proud Mary
Tom Phat

Dinner:
Attica
Da Noi
izakaya den
Tempura Hajime (as long as your not off to Japan)
san telmo (as long as not off to BA)
I will continue to ponder what should be on this list

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I second the coughulus and Izakaya den suggestions they are both great menus. I am also a fan of Gingerboy off Bourke Street. If you're in the St Kilda neck of the woods then both Cafe di Stasio and Ciaccolina are big recommendations.

For me first choice must be Attica, then Ezard & Vue de Monde (best views in MEL).
For Chinese food Flower Drum.
For Japanese Food Nobu & Taxi (fusion).
For Greek food The Press Club.

Just to be clear Press Club no longer exists people...

It's now a more casual Greek eatery called Gazi (yes still owned by GC).

Breakfast:
Coin Laundry (slightly out of the way in Armadale but worth it)
Top Paddock
2 Birds 1 Stone
Proud Mary's
Auction Rooms
Minimo Cafe
The European

Lunch/Dinner:
Vue de Monde
Ezard
Taxi
St Crispin
Cafe Di Stasio
coughulus Inc
Caffe e Cucina
A La Bouffe
Steer Bar & Grill (very trendy steakhouse, think STK in LA)
Gazi (replaced the Press Club as a more hip and casual Greek canteen)
Hellenic Republic (another GC establishment)
Izakaya Den
Grossi Florentino
Mama Baba (a trendy alternative to the other Italians on the list)

Was going to say Jacques Reymond but just remembered that it's closed as of late last year (will be re-opened as something else under a new head chef).
