Whilst Emirates may not join an alliances, they do actually have their own:

Emirates Airlines
South African Airways
Japan Airlines
Korean Airlines
Jet Airways
Jet Blue
Kingfisher
.......and now Qantas.

as well as all the usual Hotel, Credit Card and Car Rental agreements.

Not that they care, but they wouldn't have a chance of joining SkyTeam or Star Alliance, given the amount of contempt AF and LH have for EK...

I can't find it at the moment but I remember someone from EK saying that joining an alliance is like having 10 wives - you have to run every decision past them. That's why they haven't done it. It's smart for Emirates - if you have the capital to expand, then do it yourself - alliances benefit airlines which can't expand their own network themselves.
