Not sure if this is the best place to post this, but...
Booking MEL - DXB on EK (cheaper than on QF website) - it's suggesting the three EK options, and also the QF flight - all very similar prices.
I'm flying economy, and I'm QF plat.
Any thoughts on which would be the best flight to pick? When I say best, I probably mean in terms of chances of having a row to myself and getting some sleep!
I'm thinking QF - has generally been quieter for me in the past, but would appreciate your thoughts :-)

If you've any thoughts about a points upgrade then QF. EK used to reward high tier QFF'ers but that policy changed. Thought I read somewhere it changed back again. If it was J then EK metal is single seat on window and Q is duo. Pros and cons. EK can be hit and miss as can Qantas. Both would welcome you. Maybe you might score J wine etc on QF.

Thanks Pushka - na, no points upgrade - it's a super cheap fare (and I wouldn't have enough points anyway as the entire family is going).
I dunno what to do - probably swaying more towards QF.

Probably. If it was J then maybe Emirates. Y in Qantas seems safer if those upgrades aren't happening anymore. Nice while they lasted. We scored quite a few. But not everyone did.

Yes, if business I'd do EK for sure - have never managed to get access to a bar on a plane before!
But, alas, I'll be at the back - which I am still super happy about as I need some Dubai heat!!

I expect QF would be better in economy more likely to get seat shadow being WP / better seat selections. I have previously been given a J headset and J meal while in Y International.

I have done *a lot* of Y travel this calendar year on QF Codeshares on EK metal (roughly 1000 SCs worth) - mostly as QFF SG. never had an issue selecting a seat, the only Y seats not available were Exit Rows, which EK save for airport allocation. Priority Boarding handled mostly brilliantly - with the odd exception being DXB funnily enough - and always into DXB or Australia with a visit from the CSM and the Express Card provided, sometimes the visit into CDG, never a card.

The last flight I took (which was as a newly qualified WP) I was offered the Exit Row, which I took in the hope I'd be moved again (cough!!). At boarding my BP elicited the infamous "beep" however instead of being moved to J I was now in a window 3/4 back on the lower deck. Basically, I'd swapped my forward aisle (my preference in later years ... for various reasons!!) for a window 3/4 back, on a full flight - I politely vented my displeasure. A supervisor was called and I was informed that this was the first seat behind an exit row and there was no seat in front. I accepted but was then escorted on to the plane to make sure I was really happy.

Something must have been said to the cabin crew because a couple of times I was visited and asked if everything was OK - as well as being provided double spirits when I requested a G&T at pre-meal drinks.

EK's service (notwithstanding the time I was "manhandled" by a Ground Agent early one MEL morning) together with generally better quality Y meals and entertainment system would get my vote of EK over QF in Y.

Regards,

BD

Are you keen on SC earn.
If you book purely with an EK flight number and EK metal, no matter how cheap, you earn less QFF points and no SC, even if its EK metal.
Fly EK metal but with a QF flight number, thus earning you QFF points at the full relevant rate, and also earning you full QF SC.
Also as QF is flying direct MEL - SIN - LHR, so when you will be flying will also be important, as you might not have a choice if QF will stop flying its own aircrafts to DXB from next year.

Have a bit of time do check, from an April 2018 loo around, no QF own plane will fly to DXB anymore, not even once a day!
Its all code share with EK, ie, EK metal QF flight number, so not sure what your upgrade chances will be as a WP flying Y, having a chance to get up to J.
