Guys,

I'll be arriving at Changi on a regional airline at about 4pm and I'm booked to fly out on a QF flight the following morning, departing Changi at 9am. The regional airline won't allow me to interline or thru-check my bag.

I plan to pass through immigration and collect my checked bag when I arrive at Changi, wheel the bag to the Qantas check-in desk, check in, maybe go into the city for a decent meal, return to the terminal, hang out in the QF Club for a while then proceed to the Ambassador transit hotel for a good sleep.

Will Qantas allow me to check in this early at Changi? I will likely be attempting check-in at around 17 hours prior to departure.

Unless you are a Premium customer using the F checkin you won't be able to check in early for a flight.

You can however use the onsite luggage facilities:

Terminal 1
  • Near Sincere Watch at Transit Mall East, Level 2

Mr!

Qantas does have early check-in, although I doubt they will let you check-in 17 odd hours before your flight:

Early Check-in

Give it a try, and of course there is always the backup of storage which shouldn't be too much - maybe $10 or $20 overnight?

Just had a friend turned away 5 hours before a SIN/SYD flight by QF at Changi...

I pass this link onto him as well!

Mr!

Hmm, I've used it several times, the last being ~2 months ago. As long as you go to the right check-in desks then it should be ok. I'll be interested if there are other reports of early check-in not being available...

Certainly you need to go to the correct counters. These might not be (obviously) labelled Qantas (especially in row 10).
Code:
                     Check
Airline in row Operating Hours

Qantas Airways 10 0000 hrs – 1400 hrs
                       5 1400 hrs – 2359 hrs

From memory I think luggage check at Changi is about $15 SGD a bag / 24hr,
and guess what price are negotiable :)

If you have a extra large empty bag just pull all your other bags in,
you end up just storing one :)

Also unless you have QF Platinum FF status, you are not entitled to lounge access until the day of your departure, so no lounge access the night before the flight.

Thanks for all your contributions, FFers! What a goldmine of info you all are.

It sounds like it's best to just suck it and see.

My biggest problem is that I wanted to stay at the Ambassador Transit Hotel inside the airport but after collecting my bags I presume I won't be able to re-enter the transit concourse until I have obtained a QF boarding pass.

As a WP I've not had an issue. How do they do this when the flight is ment to leave at say 0020? Is it access 3 hours before or something like that?

The lounge closes at night iirc.. if your flight is after the re-opening time I would not expect them to allow access

With such a long connection, it would seem the most logical thing to do would be to just book a regular hotel in Singapore and not have to worry about it all

That's Qantas. I could also use the shared access lounge (the one that Diners Card will allow me to access). That stays open 24x7.

It's not really a long connection. Thing is, I don't enjoy S'pore at all. Not my kinda city. I would far rather sleep late at the Ambassador Transit Hotel, having already checked in, then simply roll out of bed, have a shower, then jump on the plane for a 9am departure.

Camping in downtown Singapore involves rising early - and for me, that means far more worry!

So yes, I'm particularly interested in whether I can check me and my bags in on the evening prior to a morning departure at SIN.

I have often stayed overnight at Changi after an afternoon arrival prior to a mid morning flight - that all works easily provided I have been able to thru-check my bag from my originating port to my final destination. However, this is the first time I have not been able to thru-check my bag via SIN, hence my query here.

How many Qantas flights are scheduled for departures in the wee hours after midnight? I suspect not many. And I suspect any that are will be well known to lounge staff at that location and access will be granted on the evening before the flight.

Given the possibility of not being able to do so, I would be looking at staying at the CP in T3; if you can check though, then don't need to leave much time to get to T1 and if you can't check through , you are protected against this problem

In fact, none are scheduled in the wee hours. However, Qantas often has flights leaving in the wee hours - it is not exactly the world's most punctual airline these days!

QF31 to London, for example, is scheduled for a 23:59 departure but often leaves at something like 02:30.

And I expect lounge entitlement is based on scheduled departure and not actual departure.
