Qantas faces a reduction in flights to Dubai during a three-month period next year due to urgent repairs to the runways at the world's second-busiest international airport.



It has emerged that Dubai Airport told Qantas in late April that it proposed halving the number of flights it could operate there while major construction work was carried out on two runways.



The runway closures also threaten to reduce the number of flights that Qantas' alliance partner, Emirates, can operate between its home base and Australia. Between them, Qantas and Emirates control more than half of the market share of passengers who fly between Australia and Europe.

This could give QF an opportunity to have some PER/ADL-SIN/HKG flights to take the pressure off MEL/SYD-DXB. With appropriate connections, of course. You never know, they might just be popular.

Somehow I doubt that. more likely yhat QF will lose business to other airlines suc as CX and SQ. Guess thats the consequence of having all your eggs in one basket on the London Run. Atleast in the old days QF passengers had the option of flying QF flight number via 3 ports to London

B is all I can see is more delays to arrivals and departures even with a reduced number of landing slots.

Its been in planning for some time, of interest is the fact no EK flight to our part of the world is yet cut based on the planned changes published by Airlineroute.net:

As of 08AUG13, Emirates has revised planned service reductions from 01MAY14 to 20JUL14, due to 80-day Dubai International Airport’s (DXB) runway enhancement project. Currently, EK inventory (including website) are displaying flights up to 13JUL14 inclusive. Based on current plan, Emirates plans to reduce approximately 215 – 225 weekly flights or up to 32 daily flights, which accounts roughly 15% out of the carrier’s 1450 – 1470 weekly scheduled flights (Based on May 2014 vs March 2014 schedule out of Dubai on one-way basis, including 1/2-stop(s) flight, as of 08AUG13).

Strange time to be reducing airport capacity right at the start of the European summer peak. Wouldn't Feb-April be a better time when its low season?

If they are cutting frequency but likely to have lots of planes sitting idle, wouldnt they just use a bigger plane where possible (ie run 1 daily 777-300 instead of 2 777-200s).
