I've noticed there is no easy method to search award flights with Thai Airways without actually transferring the miles over? Reason being if I have Amex points I'd like to see whats on offer for particular dates with the various partner airlines before committing myself to the single airlines program. Has anyone overcome this?

It is free to sign up for ROP. Just create an account and then you should be able to search availability. Other option is to call. ROP has some of the best award availability going around but note that their fuel surcharges are extremely high now and the points cost isn't that low either. They work best for there own higher tier members by offering half price awards and guaranteed upgrades.

Yeah I made an account a few weeks ago the only issue is when I try to search award flights it says I have insufficient miles, but I don't want to risk transferring miles to them if there's no availability, etc.

Wow, I just had a look, that must have been something with their recent website upgrade for ROP. 2 months ago you could search for any flights even if you didn't have enough miles.

I would say the next best option is to use united.com. Then call Thai to confirm prior to transferring your miles.
