I have been researching pricing differences lately and have found some pretty huge price differences.

I am 24 (under 25 min for most car rentals), and looked at bookings a Standard for Friday 30 Sep, pickup 10am, to Saturday 31 Sep, drop off 10am from MEL. This is what I was quoted;

Avis (Preferred Wizard) - $58.99
Hertz (Gold +) - $108.42
EuropCar (Privilege Executive) - $130.26

Is this normal? Is there normally such a large gap between brands?

Normally, I have found the prices similar, but sometimes the price variations such as you describe occurs. I think that it just shows that some of the companies are exhausting their availibility for the given day, while others still have a good supply.
