A bit of unexpected last minute flying at the end of my review year has me closer to 2 x platinum than expected. My review occurs next week, leaving me potentially this weekend to try something crazy - but is it worth it? I need 190 SCs to gift platinum to SWMBO. The only real benefit will be an extra 4 J upgrades, and I'm not sure there is an overly cheap way to get the SCs.

What would you do?

Unless I was in the US this weekend with access to some nice cheap DL runs then no I wouldn't do it.

Unsure where you are based.... but i hear there are some lemon parties here in Berlin......

When you say the benefit will be the extra 4 J upgrades I assume you mean because you will be traveling with the comped WP? It seems to me that it comes down to whether its worth it for the person your gifting it to and if they are not your partner would they be willing to pay the cash for the fares to get you there? In my current situation I would do it, I have a wife and 2 year old who occasionally travel on their own. The wife will only travel business when she's on her own because she can't get row 3 ( I know that sounds terrible but she's not a spoilt child we have more than enough points for J Domestics and our daughter has my ADHD so she needs the space) that being said IF she was WP again we could select row 3 and use up some of our free CC flights so for me I think it would be worth it.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I got a second WP for my wife and would do it again in a heartbeat. Apart from a really nice gift in itself for the few occasions she travels alone, benefits include the 100% points bonus on her tickets (we family pool to my account), the elite level hotel and car hire status again, the 4 upgrade certificates and lots of lounge guests for when we're travelling with family. Was definitely worth it, although I did have longer than a weekend to make it happen!

Maybe if you reach double platinum they return all the enhancements they've taken away from regular platinum?

190 SCs isn't really 'close', it's just closer than you'd expected. It's still a big investment. I'd not do it personally, but it depends on what WP is worth to you.

I've gifted my SO SG, and that seems to work fine for us - though that may be because she doesn't actually like Row 3 as she likes having her bag under the seat (and I guess she is short enough that every seat on the plane seems like Row 3 to her)

I've heard that when you get double platinum your get a special link to a functioning VA website ;). Seriously though 190sc and cost involved I personally wouldn't bother.

My understanding was a WP could use their certificate on anyone, so I'd be using them for me - unless I've got that wrong! We wouldn't buy flexi's normally for personal travel and I'd take a punt on the upgrade lottery, normally cheaper than flexi + WP upgrade.

Agreed - best option I've seen is PER-AKL return in J via east coast for around $2800. Don't think its worth it - the money would be better spent on bidding for upgrades. The missus will be perfectly happy with SG card.

My understanding is that you must also be traveling and they have to be on your reservation. Happy to be corrected on that one though
