As most people know, the quickest way to gain Star Alliance Gold is with Aegean airlines freq flyer program. It only requires 20k tier miles to qualify - ie one return economy trip to Europe. However, from 24 November they are 'enhancing' the Miles&Bonus program. It will require 24k points including four flights on Aegean or 48k points without the Aegean flights.

If you happen to have 20k star alliance miles not allocated - I'd quickly join Aegean Miles&Bonus and qualify as a gold member.

From Aegean:

In the new Miles+Bonus, the common reward program of Aegean and Olympic Air:
  • We have designed an even fairer way of accruing and redeeming miles, since the final amount of miles corresponding to each flight will be the result of both the fare category and the actual miles flown (for international flights).

(bolding is theirs!)

This is such a major disappointment.

I am only 21 and new to all this FF business but I have become quickly fascinated by the ways of maximizing value.
I am VA Gold (mostly through SQ) and wanted to start crediting some to Aegean having recently joined the M&B program and wanting Star Alliance Gold.

These new requirements make it almost identical to pursuing Krisflyer Gold status which I already believe is an unreasonably high threshold (i.e. 48000 miles on any airline to get gold on Aegean v 50000 on Krisflyer).

Has anyone had any luck on a status match VA to TK Star Alliance?

It sucks...

But I think you can status match an A3 Gold to a TK gold, so if you get it quick perhaps you could match to TK which has like a 2 year period for Gold...

TK don't match to VA. I think they only match to alliance based airlines.

It doesn't appear that TK is too willing to status match OW but still possible. It appears even stranger that other *A members are being status matched. If you are already *A gold why would you want another especially when most are from Aegean where Gold can last a lifetime very easily although until now as we know.

If you google TK status match and go down to statusmatcher option you will see QFF WP has been status matched to TK Gold.

I was thinking of possibly asking for a status match with China Airlines Dynasty Flyer Emerald Status. That is elite status on Skyteam and could assist with gaining gold with TK but I doubt this would work either.

Unreasonably high? Have you looked at how to get *G on any other carrier, except for TK for that matter?

There has been no luck matching VA to TK as far as I know. TK only recognises status from the 3 major alliances.

TK for *G is probably the best way to go for the lowest qualification - you just need to watch out for the points accumulation rates. SQ booked into classes G, Q, V, N, T or K do not credit anything under TK (A3 will accept K class). On the other hand, many UA Economy classes only credit 50% for A3 but all of them credit 100% under TK, and then TK will give 150% at most for Business and First classes, whereas A3 will give 200% and 300% respectively. For requalification A3 is not much really, which is OK for existing membership but not for those that need to qualify for the first time.

Has there been any confirmation on how to retain A3 gold? I have previously read that it was just crediting an unlisted amount of miles (say a 500m on UA dom USA) to keepthe gold rolling for another year. Will this still be the case with their changes?

*edit* I should have checked

Aegean Miles+Bonus Program Changes November 2014 (Easy Star Alliance Gold Gone!) | LoyaltyLobby

"Aegean has made it easier to retain the Silver and Gold tiers. Retaining Silver tier requires 8,000 miles + 2 Aegean/Olympic segments or 16,000 Star Alliance status miles. The Gold status requires 12,000 status miles + 4 Aegean/Olympic segments or 24,000 miles on Star Alliance airlines."

24k within 12 months, ouch

12,000 miles, which includes 4 flights on A3 or OA; or, 24,000 miles on any carriers. This must be done in 12 months.

I guess one of the funny things is that now that A3 have stiffened the qualification requirements, will they open up a bit more with status matching. After all, their usual rebuff from previous requests was that they had one of the lowest requirements in the alliance.

My current A3*G card states an expiry date of December 2016. Am I to assume that I will be issued with a new card post November 24 and that expiry date will become irrelevant?

Good question, wait and see I guess. Will be interesting if they re-eval all current gold members and give them one year expiring cards

I think the word on the street might be that everyone will be given new cards. This means that you will inherit the new expiry date as per that card, which will mean Golds will get a year from that month to requalify.

Then again, some people are reckoning that as long as you have a card, that is as good as enough evidence and trumps almost any other information (e.g. putting your number in the system and it bringing up the status from the database). So some are intending to keep the old card and use it in the "spare year" if they don't requalify under the new regime, believing that lounge attendants will either (a) not really bother checking status after noting the details on the card (even if they write it down / take a copy), or (b) be compelled to accept the card, the status as printed and the relevant expiry date and thus grant entry.

It does make some sense that the card should be produced and should "override" any other indicator of status for the purposes of, say, granting entry to a lounge. It's quite conceivable that the *A central database can take at least a month or two to be updated, which can mean you may receive your card before the automatic systems print the correct status for you. Some lounges can be quite stubborn on insisting that a card be produced on entry, even if the boarding pass clearly indicates status and entitlement (a problem for those who qualify for *G whilst on travel). I suppose if A3 actually sent a memo that was broadcast alliance wide (sounds ambitious) that old cards were effectively void after a certain date (say early next year) so lounges would be aware to check for new A3 cards, then the technique described in (b) would also not work.

All the details of the new program can be found here: Miles+Bonus | Aegean Airlines

Some highlights:

Tier Miles Purchase
Award Miles Purchase
A3 Complimentary Upgrades
Family Pooling

Looks like if you have Gold with A3 now you will be rolled over to the new program next month (better double check mailing addresses!) and your expiry will reset to Nov 2015.

Although nowhere near as good value as 3 years status for very low cost it is still possible to maintain *G cheaply enough if 1 routes their EU travel via AUH & ATH on A3 code to pick up the 4 sectors - not sure how it compares to other programs but for example I see SYD-AUH-ATH-CDG would allow an existing Gold to requalify in 1 go by meeting the 4 A3 sectors and 12k miles required.
