Does anyone know if AA will accept a waitlist for "A" class seats and how does the waitlist clear into confirmed?

[ie does does the waitlist clear before checkin/boarding ahead of all the AA members who mill around/stare at a name board demanding a free upgrade?]

Most AA members are not waiting for a free upgrade , but an upgrade using electronic upgrade credits. Only those with EXP status get complimentary upgrades as part of the AAdvantage benefits

The waitlist will clear if Revenue Management decide to release A class availability which is completely separate to the X use for upgrade credits.

Best thing to do is set up an EF alert for A class and call if it becomes available rather than rely on auto processing of a waitlist

This worked well whilst I was waiting in the J lounge at JFK when I got a reminder PM from a member here to say that my UG had been processed :D

2 follow up questions:

(1) Is it a sure thing that revenue will release "A" in days before flight or will they choose to give remaining "F" seats to an AA member on either of the above AA member scenarios you detail?

(2) If you want to be on a particular flight do you book in to "L" [ie economy class] and waitlist in "A". What if the flight also has no "L" as well as no "A"?

There is no such thing as a sure thing when it comes to airline revenue management.

A will only be released if they believe they cannot sell all the remaining F seats for F fares. AA used A class for paid circle fares (such as OneWorld Explorer), instant upgrade fares (such as YUP, though these often book into P these days), EVIP upgrades and AAdvantage mileage upgrades. All of these are confirmed seats when A class is available.

EXP comp upgrades and other AAdvantage members using 500 mile upgrade certs will be booked into X class. X waitlists are revised at various times depending on the status of the AAdvantage member. EXP members who have requested a comp upgrade to X will be reviewed 100 hours before scheduled departure time. If that does not clear, then they can join the airport waitlist once they have checked in.

It is my expectation, but I have no proof, that before X is offered to an EXP at the 100 hour mark, the wiatlist for A will be serviced. Its also possible A will be released around that time.

you should be able to do that.
What if the flight also has no "L" as well as no "A"?
confirm another flight and waitlist the flight you want.
