Domestic Points Upgrade Instant vs. Waitlist?

I have put in a upgrade points request for BNE - SYD - BNE on 738's.

The BNE - SYD leg was confirmed instantly and the points deducted.

The return is wait listed. I have had a look on expert flyer and it shows 1ACDF as blocked and no other seats taken.

Would there be a reason to not confirm the upgrade? Obviously there is a limit to how many upgrade seats they pre-confirm per flight, so perhaps they have already upgraded some pax who just haven't selected seats?

I am thinking of cancelling and re-requesting upgrade to see if it is just a glitch, there was some mucking around when I booked including changing the flights. I should ad at this point it is for 4 pax for a flight in 2 months time.

Empty seats does not mean available for upgrades, if yield control think they can sell them you wont get a confirmed upgrade, which occurs when there are award seats on offer.

You are looking at it the wrong way - empty seats may be seats unallocated but filled.
You need to see how many U seats are available and that would give you a better clue as to the inventory available. If there is enough U (cheat way of checking is to see if you can make a points booking in the J cabin for the number of seats you would like) call QF to sort it, if not you have to wait.

No award availability for 4 (or even 2) on our flight, or in deed most flights that day. Have to drop number of pax to 1 in order to open up some availability for half the flights, but still the other half nothing.

One thing of note is that we fly out 2 weeks before QLD school holidays start and the return is on the Sunday in the middle of the 2 week holidays.

Is it wrong to bring up here how you can have instantly confirmed upgrades on QFd but not on QFi...

The wait listed upgrade will only happen when the run the process much closer to the flight date, if there is no U availability then you have to wait.
