Hi, looking at our schedule for SYD-BNE with baggage including oversized (snow skis & snowboard bags).
Are there any restrictions as to how early we can use the bag drop (& oversized baggage facility) prior to departure? And do Q Bag Tags work on oversized or do you use a specific paper label ('oversized')?

Yes - the Q tags work on oversize bags .......... sometimes!

Often there seems to be a problem at the oversize bag drop with the tag reader, so then they just put a paper tag on the bag.

Not sure about how early you can check the bags.

cheers,

Al

I don't know if it's the same for all QF terminals but I asked an agent at MEL today and she said "four or five hours," wasn't too sure.

Once I tried to check in very early using the self-serve kiosks and after it couldn't find my booking I went to a desk - turns out the machines only open up for flights no more than six hours ahead. Leads me to suspect that if the machines do up to six hours ahead, then bag drop ought to be the same. You might be able to check in even earlier if staff assisted.

I really think the agent I asked was a bit clueless...

It may depend on the airport however in BNE flights open for checkin at the airport 6 hours before whether using self service kiosk or at a checkin counter by a CSA. Even if you OLCI 24 hours prior you will still only be able to drop your bags off no earlier than 6 hours before your flight departure or whatever is applicable in MEL.

As long as there is a scanner at the oversize belt a) for QF to scan & activate your Qtag & b) provided the security people who accept the oversize have a scanner that reads the Qtag you are fine otherwise QF staff will need to issue you a paper tag for those items.

Just remember that your skiis and snowboard bags are part of your regular checked luggage allowance so if you have more than one checked item each (eg one suitcase & one snowboard bag) you will need to pay $30.00 excess per person for the second piece or $20.00 pp if you pre-arrange it online beforehand.

Thanks for the heads up. Forgot about the checked baggage change & obviously didn't read all the itinerary doc.
Better now than unexpected on the day.
