Hi, I'm planning a trip to the US for December 2013.

I'm looking at the QFF award seat availability. I can get a seat easily to either LAX or DFW outbound on the 9th. The problem is the return flight. I want to return on the 20th and with LAX I would have to return via BNE which is a total of 18 hours. There is nothing at all available on the 20th via DFW.

Is it likely that Qantas will release more award seats that I can risk waiting for?

I could grab the outbound seat now I guess and wait for the return flight availability but is this risking not getting anything at all ?

I seem to recall last year around July doing some investigations for last December and there were good flights then with availability. Am I too early maybe?

Thanks!

QFF usually don't release extra seats later, its pot luck if not there now, QFF status can help.

If travelling in J the DFW/BNE/SYD is fine.

or try EXPERT FLYER for notifications.

Ok, thanks.

Unfortunately I don't have any status :(

Looking at the Terms and Conditions of the award flights, it looks like I could make a booking then if something better comes along I could change the flight number or day of travel? That is how I understand it.

Book immediately while the seat is available. You can continue to check for something better and change to it if it becomes available for a change fee which I think is 3,500 points. December is a very hard month fit award seats as everyone grabs them fur school holidays especially to the USA.

Good luck.

Thats not true at all, it all depends on yield control and how the picture for the flight changes in their eyes. Its not uncommon to have award releases in the weeks before departure.

Yeah, get in quick. I was looking for the 18th and they were gone within 24 hours so I had to book the 17th. As I recall there were some hell cheap J seats around the 6th, but it was too early for us.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I should add that I agree with other posts, get in while you can.

Thanks everyone. I have made the booking :) and I will keep an eye on a better return flight if I can.

I have also paid extra for advanced seat selection.

I see I can change the flight easily via 'Manage Your Bookings' if I want to but there is a warning that if I change the flights I will forfeit my advanced seat selections on the original booking. Does anyone know if that means I would have to pay again or would the previous payment be used on the new seats?

TIA.

Did you get good seats eg 80K or similar?
