There is a QF flight (QF9 I think) that is MEL-LHR (with a short stop over in DXB). Does this count as 1 flight or 2 for the QFF programme?

Alternatively you can book 2 QF flights (and change planes in DXB) to the same destination that will count as 2.

Thx

It counts as 1 flight.

If you flew QF9 and then changed to QF1 then that would count as 2 flights.

Indeed. Fly QF9 all the way to LHR and you only get 60 SC's on a discount econony ticket. Change fight numbers at DXB and you earn 70 SC's for the same MEL-LHR or vice versa trip

Why the different SCs for the same distance?

When I have booked from CNS to BNE sometimes I have gone Via TSV and changed planes there if possible.

So I get 10sc's from CNS-TSV and the 15sc's from TSV-BNE.

If I book direct I get 15sc's only.

I also get more FF points as well. I get an extra nearly 1000 FF points.

But still same distance. I thought SCs were calculated on flown miles, not flight numbers.

It's flown miles per sector, and the ranges for each level of SC earn are quite broad. For example, a discount Y flight from 0-600 miles gets 10 SCs. Therefore one flight of 590 miles gets only 10 SCs, but if you split it into two flights of say 300 and 290 miles, you get 20 SCs.

In the case of MEL-LHR, the great circle distance is 10503 miles, which in the SC earning table is zone 10 - 60 SCs in discount economy.

MEL-DXB is 7231 miles and DXB-LHR is 3421 miles, which are zones 8 (40 SCs) and zone 4 (25 SCs) respectively - 65 SCs total.

Flew QF9 over, currently sitting in BA Galleries waiting for QF2 + 10 home

I've done the same thing; one of the FAs asked me why I didn't just take the 10 all the way from LHR and I think he thought I was a bit of a weirdo when I said it was for the extra SCs!

It can also let you have an extra hour or so in the DXB F lounge which is definitely worth it imo :)

For some, changing flights at Dubai may not be about the SCs but more about ~'s. Changing in both directions gets the 4 flights on QF necessary for status, but staying on same flight number only gets 2.

Sydney to London can be strange like this.

Often the cheapest option has you fly to Mel then to DXB and get the originating Syd place to LHR anyway.
Works out I think with an extra 20 SC and a handful of miles extra for a cheaper price but you do lose a few hours making your way to Mel.

I booked it this way because for some reason it was significantly cheaper, maybe loadings were lighter or something. After having flown it yesterday, I actually preferred the extra hour in the DXB lounge. The extra SCs were just a bonus.

I have booked this as well to get longer on the ground in DXB for both the F lounge access and the more relaxed pace when getting off QF 9 and onto QF 1
