Diners - Paypal

3% is just their foreign transaction fee..... when I take into account the rate that Paypal converts from AUD to USD..... (bad) and then the rate that Diners converts the USD back to AUD (worse)..... it ends up about 10% more than the original AUD price anyway.

Anyone thought of going to FOS over the foreign currency charge for Paypal?

They normally get charged a few thousand per complaint so that might get them to fix it.

its not a Diners issue - its that Paypal have an agreement with Discover in the US to recognize all cards with the Diners number sequence as US cards, therefore charging everything in USD.

FOS might not cost Diners very much to defend if FOS determined there is no case from the outset. That's what they told me last year when I was planning to go to FOS against Westpac for significant short changing me on points in expectation they would fold due to the cost of FOS.

Let us know how you go if you pursue it.

How do you know that they weren't bluffing?

Who told you that? Westpac or the FOS?

The FOS will generally try to get out of investigating something on the first attempt.

I don't have a diners but would potentially as a lot of my spend is through paypal

I think you have a reasonable case: You are being charged in AUD on an Australian site and so should not be charged any FX Fees.

I agree there was likely an element of bluffing on Westpac's part. I reckon FOS make more money if they can justify an investigation and a case that escalates so their client (the financial institution) pays them more. Again I might not have sufficient knowledge of their practices.

I didn't wanna call Westpac's bluff on that occasion as could have lost more than they'd avoided giving me & distraction from my work it would cause.

Sounds like a good misleading or deceptive conduct case waiting to happen with Diners.

I don't understand why Diners doesn't negotiate with PayPal to accept charges in currencies other than US$.
