I have a trip planned to Vietnam on the 19th July. Unfortunately my Australian passport has just been ruined by me, so I am now in possession of only my British passport. It will be a rush to get a new Aussie Passport sorted, so I am wondering if I can travel from Per-Hanoi and from Hanoi - Perth on my British passport without any issues?

Of course I would get a visa letter for my british passport and get the VOA for that passport.

I might be able to just make it by re applying for an aussie passport. I get back in Perth on the 4th July, do the passport application on the 5th, courier documents which reach Canberra on the 6th July. They take <10 working days which means it should be despatched by the 13th, and should reach Perth by the 18th July (takes 4 business days). This seems super risky though, unless you can specify for them to courier your passport to you?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I work away hence the reluctance at applying for an aussie passport right now.

I think leaving Australia on your British passport might be difficult, as they would have no record of your arrival. I'd be on the phone to DFAT right now if I were you.

I know a guy that managed to send their docs in the morning and have the passport the next day in the afternoon (from PER as well!) This was a couple of years ago.. But i am sure it can be done with in a few days.. Goodluck!

An Australian citizen should, where possibe, leave and return to Australia on an Australian passport. On return you need to show proof you are an Australian citizen, ie Australian passport. Otherwise you could face lengthy delays at Immigration. See more under dual nationals on Smart Traveller website.

Arrange for the Priority Processing Service:
https://www.passports.gov.au/Web/PriorityProcFee.aspx

Priority Processing Service

The Australian Passport Office is committed to mailing out an eligible applicant's passport within ten working days of receiving all information and documentation we require. However, you should allow extra time for Australia Post outlets to forward your application to a passport office.

If you need your passport in a hurry, you can use our Priority Processing Service.

This service guarantees that an eligible applicant's passport will be ready for despatch within two working days of a passport office receiving everything it needs. Allow extra time for your application to be forwarded to the passport office and for your passport to be mailed out.

There is a processing fee for this service, in addition to the normal passport application fee. Priority processing is not available for certain categories of applications; for example, applications for children where consent of both parents has not been provided.

Thanks, looks like it will be an expensive mistake. They even want the remains of my destroyed passport!

I have trashed my Passport and found the process to get the new one quite painless except for the extra cash they want for priority processing. In Melbourne the whole process took less than an hour. The info for Perth states a two day priority service is available.

In your case why not apply in person via the Passport office in Perth. (I believe that you will need an appointment)

See: DFAT Western Australia State Office.

Booked the appointment with the Perth office. Might make it in time for my holidays without the priority processing fee. Let's see. Thanks for your help.

Just remember that a British Passport isn't for showing to people, it's for batting them out of the way with :D
Seriously though, as soon as customs see my British Passport I usually just get waved through. Really bizarre.
