Wondering what members opinions / suggestions are for any locations to have a good White Christmas?

Thinking of trying to have 3 or 4 weeks away from December 24th 2019, which would be a trip for 2 adults & maby 1 child (10 yrs).

280K U Class for 3 people, which we would try enough countries to not make our time away "too crowded".

Some locations I've found online are:

- Canada?
- Sweden?
- Norway?
- US?

I thoroughly enjoyed my White Christmas in Cappadocia, Turkey. I stayed in a cave and woke up to snowfall. The danger is of course that it may not snow.

New Years in Moscow was a mistake, many things were shut for Orthodox Christmas.

I visited Abisko in the Swedish Arctic Circle multiple times in winter and always recommend it.

We are planning on a white Christmas in Copenhagen this year. Vienna would be another possibility if you are looking at Europe? You might be able to visit southern Germany as well as Budapest if you go to Vienna.

But as already mentioned, the weather is unpredictable. Back in 2012, we arrived in Zurich on Boxing Day and they had unusually temperate weather (high single digits IIRC) over the last few days so there was no snow at all.

To be reliably "white" you either need to be far north or high altitude.

Not even Stockholm, Sweden or Oslo, Norway has a reliable white Christmas. But they sure have snow in winter!

Some of the countries you mention are very expensive for a longer trip of 3 or 4 weeks.

I'd go with Austria. They do xmas exceptionally well. Pick a small village in the alps, preferably above 1000m altitude and you're about a 90% chance of a white xmas.

Some suggestions would be Saalbach, Lech, Seefeld, St Anton.

The atmosphere is unrivalled, but do note that the 24th (Xmas eve) is the main festive day in the Germanic countries rather than the 25th.

If you're looking for something different, I just spent Christmas in Kazakhstan and loved it. The country doesn't officially celebrate Christmas, but there were Christmas trees/decorations everywhere and Christmas carols playing all over the place. There was a good amount of snow. If you're interested in skiing, there is a big winter ski resort near Almaty with amazing views, good skiing conditions and the prices aren't that high.

Could be a little difficult to get there on a Oneworld Award though, and note that you might need a transit visa for Russia if transiting through there to/from Kazakhstan with S7 Airlines.

Only basic countries that have snow during xmas. Still looking into it, if it doesn't occur in 2019, it will occur a year or 2 later :)

To get you in the mood, Seefeld at xmas:

Seefeld, Austria. First on your list.

The fourth reference is also correct, being the train station in the village. It is conveniently on the rail line between Munich and Innsbruck.

I think as others mentioned, if you really want a guaranteed white Christmas you will need to be at altitude.

That said, I think it's a wonderful idea to be in some sort of resort area for Christmas and away from a big city. While yes, there will be lots of christmas decorations, markets and shops in the city, the charm of a small village during that time of year cannot be underestimated.
