Hi All,
I have taken the plunge, purchased my miles, put flights on hold and now only one decision to make and that I need your help.

I am flying one way to Abu Dhabi in business, I live in Melbourne but am thinking of flying to Sydney just so I can go on the new A380 with Etihad, so my decision is leave from home in Melbourne in the 77W or go to Sydney and fly in the new one.

What would you do?

Should be same points cost so.why go direct if you can connect? Not tempted to.try the First apartment?

If it doesn't cost you any more (than time) it's a no-brainer. First apts all the way!

Go via SYD. As others have said, it won't cost you any extra. (And if you really wanted, you could even fly into Sydney and then onto New Zealand for the same price.)

Hi Guys thanks for your responses, I have had internet issues for over a week and this has been the first time I have had a chance to see what you have said.

Don't worry Alanslegal I dont have the funds to buy more points for the apartments so you are safe:)

i was wondering how I would be able to get Mel to Syd included, AA said it would cost more miles?? Bottom line I have decided to fly to Syd from Melbourne purely to travel in the A380, I think it will be worth it over the 300 product from Melbourne, hope I am right

It might cost more because its not in thenone world alliance ie QF will get you to Sydney only. But its worth another call to check.

:) I am a fan of the A380's so I'd take ANY A380 over any other plane on a comparable route / time. I googled a trip report of the EY A380 and I am highly impressed, looks better than any business class I have flown so will be very tempted to try it out one day - but only once the Apartment has been ticked off ;) here is the report i found

TRIP REPORT: Etihad A380 Business Class February 2015 | TheDesignAir

I had a look at flight times, the dep from SYD is quite late so it will be dinner, then maybe a movie and sleep, so not much time to enjoy the whole business class fun - they do have a nice lounge on board too. If its your first time, it is like a kid in a candy store ;)

The flight dep MEL is more of a late afternoon flight, so you get dinner, a movie or two but more awake time to enjoy the business class experience, but of course you're flying the older style 77W cabins.

Personally, I'd go for the ex SYD departure just to fly the A380. And you never know, it might be your day where they scan your ticket at the gate, you get a beep and get op upped to the Apartments :)

Interesting to see if you can get it via SYD with no extra cost.
I was declined AUH-SYD-BNE in one ticket.
The agent said there is direct F service AUH-BNE and although I tried to explain the (huge) difference it didn't help much.

So they will force you to take the most direct route even if the alternative meets all the requirements?

Thanks guys, Alanslegal you have convinced me, I will fly to Sydney mid afternoon and go with the A380, the lounge in Sydney sounds better than Melbourne too.
