I will be in Santiago for a few days next week.
Taking advantage of a friend's last long layover on a 747 shift before they're replaced by the 787s.
Keen to hear recommendations for day trips.
Obviously I can use a search engine so I'm looking for your recommendations.
Would consider an overnight stay away if the trip is worthwhile.

Definitely head over to Valparaiso and I would recommend staying overnight. It's a bohemian kinda town, lots of cool graffiti street art and murals. Would definitely recommend spending at least a good half day wandering around the streets (lots of hills and steps).

Take the metro to Parajitos which is a major bus terminal and there'll be buses at least every 30min to Valparaiso. It's an easy 1.5hr bus ride from Santiago.

Not sure what the situation is like over there at the moment with protests and riots.

Probably not what you were after, but if I was in that position I’d be seeing if I could squeeze in a hop over the Andes for a day / night amongst the Malbecs and Pinots in Mendoza.

It's a long time since I was there but I echo the Valparaiso recommendation. If art history interests you, Pablo Neruda owned three houses - excellent communisting there, Pablo - in Santiago and Valparaiso, and they're lovely to tour.
And in the centre of Santiago there's a huge park on a hill called Cerro San Cristobal with a funicular.

I'd be interested in what you ended up doing and how you find the disturbances in Santiago
