Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) Stopover Tips

Why did your travel insurance have to cover it if it wasn’t your fault?. Presumably they will claim off the Dart insurer?

Because the hospital holds the patient responsible for payment of the bills, normal procedure. In fact we also received a Court issued Caveat against our property or any compensation received by us, to ensure payment of the account. This again is normal U.S. procedure. The patient receives the treatment, it doesn't matter the circumstances as to how/why the patient was admitted. This is no reflection upon the Dallas Methodist Hospital. The staff and the facilities there are magnificent - after spending 3 weeks there I know. Their local patients are normally admitted for 1-2 days, have their operation and are sent home to recuperate. I was there for 3 weeks because the operation could not be carried out immediately until the swelling went down and then had to remain there for another 2 weeks before being fit to fly home. The hospital even includes its own hotel accommodation that facilitated my wife being able to stay there at a greatly reduced rate as compared with a city hotel rate.

Upon our return to the hospital in 2017, we were greeted by about 20 of the staff with whom I had come into contact with, including the head of the Trauma Dept. Their PR Manager also asked me to do an interview for publication the hospital's quarterly, glossy magazine and have even prepared a 4 minute youtube video for inclusion on their website, including views of the accident scene, the high speed ambulance ride to hospital and the interview.

QBE Travel Insurance were also great, paying all the bills without a problem. The U.S. medical system is very strange to us. You receive a huge bill and then your insurance company negotiates a better deal. That is what happened in my case. Because DART is a government operation, any compensation they are required to pay is limited to $100,000. The insurance company and their U.S. agent are in a much better position to do the negotiating than an Australian individual. The individual can then hire their own lawyer (has to be one registered to appear in a Texan court) to negotiate a settlement between the bus company as to what they will pay and what amount the insurance company will accept as subrogation (a refund of their costs from the policy holder). His fee is of course also negotiable. We were very lucky to find a very successful lawyer in Dallas who ensured the hospital, the insurance company, himself and myself all received acceptable compensation.

Isn’t all the recommendations just the usual Dallas and or Forth Worth things to do?

Only @ozdenis has done Dallas differently :D:D:D

If you have kids then somewhere close by for things to do with kids especially after flying +20hrs BNE > SYD >DFW as the kids normally sleep on the flight and are full of energy when they get off the plane.

We stayed at Springhill Suites at DFW/Grapevine. From there we head over to the grapevine mall, which has Lego Land and an Aquarium. We did legoland last time and next time we will do the aquarium. The hotel has a free shuttle bus from the airport and free happy hour/nibbles mon to thurs. So after visiting the mall then coming back for nibbles/drinks, its then enough for all of us to hit bed by 6pm and be up at normal US time the next morning with no much jet lag. The hotel might cost a little more then other cheaper places, but the proximity to the mall is ideal!.

The point of the thread was to elicit suggestions beyond the obvious 'what to do', that is, Dealy Plaza and the book repository.

I got a lot of fresh ideas.

Hi wise travelers, I plan to arrive at Dallas/Fort Worth airport at 5.30 pm on Saturday Nov 3 (domestic flight) and my departure will not be until 8.00 pm the next day (Sunday) en route to SYD on QF8. I will need a nights accommodation and things to see on a Sunday morning. What are transport options airport to town and back? How long will it take?
Any suggestions as to a moderate priced hotel near to what I should be doing? I want to be back at D/FW by 5.00 pm on Sunday afternoon.

Lots of good mid price hotels near DFW

Search “hotels near me” when you pinpoint DFW in Google map. Free hotel shuttle to/from airport.

Grapevine Mills is a nice shopping mall nearby $10-15 by Uber

Uber is easy peasy

Rodeo in Fort Worth is worth a look 1hr away from airport hotel with $50 UberXL . Dinner around there is also good if you are into Cowboy fare

Or if want to dine closer - dinner at Grand Hyatt DFW is good - again use free hotel shuttle

If you're into art, the Dallas Museum of Art and Nasher Sculpture Center are close to each other. You could then walk a couple of minutes to Klyde Warren Park to have lunch from one of the many food trucks. Another fun thing is having BBQ at Pecan Lodge in Deep Ellum. Stop by Emporium Pies next door for dessert. There are also lots of different bars in that area.

I've stayed at the Westin Downtown and it was really convenient. Worth checking out deals on Booking dot com and seeing what's available closer to the airport if you want to be out that way.

Enjoy, Dallas is a great city!

I second the Kimball museum in the beautiful building designed by Louis Kahn and Renzo Piano in FWorth.
