Hi all, a quick question.
I've got an award ticket with CX from HKG to AKL and arrive at 0735 on a Monday morning. I then need to fly to CHC and I'm currently looking at my options.
Neither JQ or ANZ are OW so there's no benefit there but I suspect that ANZ may look after me a little better if my flight is delayed?
ANZ have a flight every hour and I was thinking of catching a 1000 flight. Does that seem reasonable? I have no status with NZ so I'll be sitting at the departure gate... :(

And would there be any benefit of getting a flex ticket when I'll be in the air and unable to change my flight until I land anyway?

A few years ago, Air NZ flipped me the middle one when my incoming EK flight was delayed and I missed my flight to ZQN. Expensive lesson learned. I would get a flexible ticket to CHC if I were you.

I'd suspect in the normal course of things, the timing would be ok.

But, if the CX flight was late, having a flex with ANZ might be helpful. I say 'might' .

If the flights go every hour to CHC, I'd give myself an extra hour or 2 as they obviously will be seperate PNR's. Book the 1100 or 1200 flight, as some insurance.

Thanks for the replies. The Flex ticket was only another $40ish so it's probably a safe option. I figure the terms stipulate that I can change the flight BEFORE the departure time, but I suppose ANZ may be kinder to me if I'm still in the air at the departure time?

Unless CX have wifi in their A350s? :)

Hmmm riteo. Will ANZ let me change my flight online a few hrs before my flight or will they want me to ring them if it's within 24hrs of the flight (sorry, I rarely buy flex tix).

Reading ANZ website, says yes they will let you change ON day of departure for Flex. Appears they have 2 types of flex, perhaps one is Y , the other J? not sure.

Hope it helps point you in the right driection. But, still I would give yourself an extra hour or 2.

Looks encouraging as I didn't see anything stating that you had to change your flight before the actual departure time. Looks like it might be sfest to book the cheaper Flex fare and still leave a few hrs between the flights (I'll just work on my laptop).

You can change flex even 30mins prior, I think the latest I've done it is an hour.

Flexitime is as stated - change time of flight but flexiplus allows changing the day and is fully refundable - useful if something truly goes haywire with your departure.
The earliest I think you can change these are at midnight on the day of your flight NZ time and you do not have to pay any fare difference. So being able to change it is very easy even on the NZ app and depends on whether you have access to Wifi on the ground or in the air. "good Wifi" eg The EK one isn't great and I'm not sure I'd rely on that for changing a booking. I've never tried to change the day of the flight its really been the time, or I've wanted it to be refundable just in case.

You'll know if your flight is delayed before you leave the departure lounge so if its past midnight NZ time then you're safe to change it (only 4 hr time difference with HKG with NZ being ahead?)
Alternatively I would book a much later flight in the day and then bring it forward once you've landed. With that regularity there is bound to be a seat available to Chc but you may not necessarily get your favourite seat but it's a short hop anyway.
You can check in at the NZ kiosks at international for a domestic flight as long as its 1hr prior to departure, if tighter than that you'll need to walk or get the free bus over with your gear. I think I used the bus when it was raining once, otherwise appreciate the walk.

You can get cheeky and book the cheapest latest fare of the day to save some $$ and as said, then bring the booking forward once you've landed at no extra cost.

That's a great tip! Currently, the 1230 flight is the cheapest flexitime ticket so that would be a safe bet and then when I land at (hopefully) 0730ish, I should be able to request an earlier flight (depending on seats, of course)? That sounds like a great plan because, as it stands, a flex 1230 ticket is cheaper than a basic ticket on the 0900 and 1000 flight!
Yeah I quite like the walk, esp after a long flight. Last time the dom-int walk took me around 10 minutes.

NZ and CX are code sharing on HKG - AKL so you may be able to add a flight to CHC to our existing PNR. Good luck
Unfortunately I've used up almost every last Qantas point with my booking so I wasn't able to add any further flights (well, until my Citibank signup bonus arrives... :) )

You'll be fine with that plan ;)

Great thanks! I've just booked a flex ticket for the 12:30 flight and will hopefully land on time and head straight for the dom terminal and see if I can change the flight.

Given that NZ flies into HKG (and codeshare with CX) if your HKG-AKL flight is going to have a delayed departure, get your (flexi) ticket changed in HKG while waiting for the delay. I would suspect that anything after that point which would cause you to miss the connection would have far more serious consequences to consider...

Happy wandering

Exactly, that would be my plan if I knew my x-HKG was going to be delayed before we departed.
