Will be booking a SYD-HKG return award later in the year, one leg Y, one J. Any thoughts as to whether I should take CX or QF on either leg? I've been in QF J now and loved it but thinking maybe I could try CX. Should be a nice experience... thoughts?

How about Y? I've read bad things about the recline on CX Y where it's a shell seat and pushes your legs into the seat in front. As I'm 6' 2" with long legs it might be an issue! I haven't travelled on CX before at all.

The QF outbound departure time is a bit more palatable (10.45am instead of 7.30am) but otherwise I'm interested to know what you think. I should be QF SG by the time I take this trip.

Which cover a whole bunch of opinions. Regardless, if there's any thoughts specifically on the Y legroom issue on CX I'd be keen to hear it.

There are three camps.

1. I love the hard shell seats, the recliners cant recline onto me and i';m more comfortable.

2. I hate the hard shell seats because i'm 6'x" tall and my knees kill after about 20mins up agains the hard seat.

3. Why are you peasants flying Y??

I'm in #2, where x=5. Too hard against my knees, cant get comfortable, cant get legs straight under the seat in front. I'd also add that many are fitted with seatbelt "airbags" which add to the discomfort.

There aint much between CX and QF J, so if it was me, it'd be CX J and QF Y (and try for an UG on the QF leg).

YMMV.

I personally love the new CX J product. If you are travelling alone, it's definitely the better offering, IMO. If you're travelling with someone, the QF arrangement is probably better, because you can at least sit next to them...

CX if travelling alone or doesn't want to see the person you are travelling with. Although some people complaint about the narrow seat of CX, the privacy, better screen, better service and flat bed make it more appealing to me.

QF screen are too small and the bed at an angle makes it hard for me to sleep.

I'd take CX J. Full flat bed (very comfy) and nice big screen right in front of you (not on the back of the seat in front miles away).

Food is so-so on CX - nothing imaginative. QF probably wins slightly on the food front (but barely). I like the CX amenity kits over QF.

Sounds like CX J and QF Y is the way to go. Looking forward to it... Thanks everyone!

I like your CX Y categories.

I choose #1

For #2, I am x= -7

For #3, I'm not that rich.

For the J product, if travelling alone, I'd go straight onto CX.

I am doing an award booking mel to hkg cx104 hkg to melb cx 163 in j they list the A330 on the cx website and I was wondering if it is the new or old j product?

Also any especially nice places stay in hkg for a week?

Thanks in advance for our help

I would guess do a dummy booking on the CX website for the same flights you are on, and check the seat map when you get the option to select your seats. If the layout is 2x2x2 it is the old product, where as if it is 1x1x1 it is new J.

Hope that helps

No need to check - all A330s to MEL are in the new configuration :)

I recommend a seat on the 'K' side. As there is only the K seats on their own aisle there is much less foot traffic.

unless they change the aircraft last minute due to emergency repairs or other reasons. it happened to me last year. I lodged a complaint to CX and they said I should have asked when I checked in.

After a few rounds of emails they gave me a free upgrade voucher and I used in for my CDG-HKG flight! That's worth more than my MEL-HKG J return ticket.

CX (IME) are very prone to changing a/c.

I wouldn't put it past them throwing in an old 2-class bird for good measure.

CXCXCXCXCXCX !! Service is impeccable.. IFE is soo much better.. Seats are very comfortable and to sleep in also..

Unless I need magic QF flights to requal my WP status..
