How do you know if a CX 777 or 747 aircraft has the new or old biz cabin product?

It just says 777 and 744 on the booking engine through CX website.

Am looking for flights CGK-HKG-SFO

The new J herringbone arrangement can usually be determined by the web site saying...
74A or 77A and 33B instead of 747 etc.

If your looking at EF or similar the 777's will show a seat map like 1-2-1 and the 33B's show as 1-1-1
On a 744 the top level will show 1-1 if its the new layout.

Only i have never been lucky enough to manage to get one :( so far !

If you can pull up a seat map (E/F or KVS) you can easily tell.

In first class, the new config 747's have seating for 9 in the pointy end, the old have 12.

In Business class, the new configs 747's in the lower deck have 4 across (1-2-1) in a Herringbone pattern, the old have 7 across (2-3-2).

For the 777's, first class has six "suites" in the noew config. For J it's as for the 747's; 1-2-1 herring bone against 2-3-2.

QF009 hates them with a passion. I have yet to experience them but my understanding from the research I have done is that they are narrow and not good for couples although the TV screen is great. However I am starting to really dislike the CX old new business class seats - they are just too short :(

That's true and alongside being served by Identikits has contributed to my decision to fly QF in preference to CX whenever possible.

But to balance that up both the QF009 Seniors loved the seats when they got them all the way LAX-HKG-SIN because 1) they're truly flat; 2) and whereas I found the seats anti-social they liked the privacy. They didn't mind the lack of width.

Any truth in the upstairs seats being 6 inches longer than the lower deck?

I'm 6 feet 1, not sure i will be happy it if its too short for me to sleep in!!!

Also, is it better to sit on the same row if 2 people travelling together? or 1 behind the other?

Has anyone here tried the new CX flat seat?

flatseats.com seems to give all negative reviews - seats are too narrow and difficult to sleep.

A colleague recently got (involuntarily) downrgraded :)p :p :p ) from F to J on a 744 service flying LHR/HKG, and said the J seats were far too narrow, and lacked privacy.

Given the herringbone style even if the seats are a little shorteryou wont be banging your feet on the seat in front as there is none...

May I enquire to what compensation he got (if any?)

Does CX hand out pajamas in long-haul Biz Class? eg HKG to USA?
QF is the only airline I am aware of that provides PJs to J passengers.

When did they start this?
They started last year in selected long-haul Sydney-centric overnight flights. And earlier this year extended it to most overnight international flights.

Notable exception is the anti PER ruling they seem to have. HKG-PER misses out. Sure it is only 8.xx_ hours long. But it sucks. Would be more enjoyable if they circled over BME for 2 hours to make it a 10.xx hour flight so I can sleep more.*

*Only applies if seated in J.

Virgin Atlantic also provide PJ's to their upper class customers. Although travelling from Australia the only destinations they serve are Hong Kong and London.

They don't even give them out in F on AA :(

Thinking for my HKG=JFK flight in July I might be taking some QF PJ's with me - 15 hours is a long time in the same clothes...

I flew CX in J from LAX - HKG earlier this week.

My 744 had the new configuration and (I know this may be controversial), although I was downstairs, I thought the CX product was far superior to QF J.

Upside

1. lie flat seat/bed

2. very comfortable - better cushioing than QF (no uncomfortable parts like the QF product)

3. great TV screen (15 inch)

4. easy access in and out and no one to clamber over you if you have the aisle.

Downside

1. appears cheaply made/flimsy (but no practical difference)

2. cocoon feeling may make some a little claustrophobic, but I really don't think it's a problem

3. configuration is anti-social - very difficult to have a conversation fom adjacent seats, so may be a disincentive for couples (that said, if a night flight, who cares ?)

Conclusion

For night flights, the CX product wins hands down. If I have a choice between QF and CX for a night flight in the future, I would sacrifice the status bonus for the CX product.

For day flights, I still prefer the QF product.

Further point

I recently travelled in F on QF to LAX and to be honest, found the CX J seat to be just as comfortable as the QF F seat. Ok, the QF seat has much more leg room and is a little bit wider, but not noticeably so, and the extra leg room only makes a difference if you're going to use it (I'm 174cm, so it made no difference to me). Only other difference is that QF F has no cocoon.

I'm not comparing other aspects of F service/cabin - just the bed.
