Have been making plans to attend a competition in South Africa next July......and lo and behold the current QF sale popped up. Just hit the purchase button on a Biz return SYD-JNB at $3990. Couldn't resist.

Not a QF FF...but flew on the 744 to and from HKG as part of an AA miles redemption to/from Europe. Was in 5B HKG-SYD and have that again to JNB.... Picked 3E coming home.... hope that's not a mistake...

If it's a four class plane you have an F seat and that's the only way to go. If it's a three class aircraft 3E is still quite good... in the forward cabin. But you lose the privacy and solo seat. I'd probably stick with the 5B or J.

No First to JNB.....
Thanks for the comments.... I think I'll stick with 3 E - just for the novelty factor of the forward cabin....:)

You say you are not a QFF, what I say is join up.
Flying QF, you get the full worths of Qpoints and QF SC, for the Aud$3990 you can get quite a haul.
Worth it in my books, even if just to use the rewards points for a "toaster" ((pun intended)).
Or use the reward points for going somewhere.
Edit: if you are a member of MCclub, you will still earn less points in CX than if with a QF flight number flying as a Qpoints member, yes?

You're right, there is no F sold on SYD-JNB vv however MEL_Traveller was just highlighting that if you get a 744 and it's still in the 4 class configuration you should 100% choose a seat up the front to get the F seat with J service.
If a 3 class plane then agreed 5B or J is the pick for a solo pax.

I'm not at my computer with the sale emails. Is it domestic as well?

Don't think any four class planes left by July 2018.
OEB is due to commence its charter work from late April 2018 and then I believe retirement

Bummer.... that would have been something to watch for.... although I imagine QF elites would get first crack at any F-sold-As-J seats....

I will admit that I'll be checking the Lounge guesting thread to see if any kind soul can guest me into the F lounge that day.....:)

If your aircraft has 5B/J there's no F cabin sold as J. But keep an eye out because there can always be substitutions (although your current 3E should map across).

As for seating access, usually I've seen row 4 open in the F cabin on the 747, at least for silver. Higher status can get other more forward rows unlocked.
