SMH has an article on lighter than expected (hoped for?) loads to South Africa for the world cup. Maybe it's just the wording but...

"It flew the Hollywood actor and ''Qantas ambassador'' John Travolta, and the company's chief executive, Alan Joyce, to South Africa for special appearances." I've never really "got" the cult of John Travolta that Qantas use and that's not an attack on him but it always strikes me as odd when he pops up in a QF Captains uniform. As for Alan Joyce attracting punters....lol

Are there any Marketers out there who can offer me some insight into why we would have some special affinity with Travolta?

Ok, well that makes sense then, thanks Simongr. I'm just waiting for the day when they advise over the PA that JT is driving the bus that I'm on, then I'll be impressed.

He's a popular figure around the world, parks the Qantas 707 in his carport and can fly the big birds too. IIRC he is endorsed to fly either the 747 or 380

And i think he is also able to legally fly qf metal as well. I am sure i read it somewhere.

Nope - he is only got a SIC rating for the 707 and is not type rated on any QF model,

Ahh I think he did the QF training on the 747.. only person outside the company to do it.

A high profile star who is a Qantas enthusiast and doesn't do coke and appears to be in a stable relationship! (well that we know of)

It got me out to go and take a few snaps of the V-Jet when it was last in Sydney and it looks quite good.

Not sure if I am missing the lingo but the article I linked said that he maintained some form of certification on the 747 - maybe that lapsed since the article (six years old).

Pretty sure he has flown the A380, remember seeing an interview about his relationship with QF and how he loved it because nowhere else could he do such things.

I think I would be more concerned than impressed:!:

I too find Qantas' use of JT as bizarre. Its even more bizarre when he's trotted out to visit the Socceroos and "wish them luck". The players seem not to know what to think, they're respectful of this person, but unable to link the relevance of his presence either as a Qantas marketing tool or as someone thrust into our national football team's world.

A stable but weird relationship. He is a scientologist and they have weird ideas about child birth, among other things. That is a major negative for me.

As fir the relationship with Australia. Besides his love of qantas, his link with Australia is grease and Olivia neutron bomb
