Hi Everybody

I have a few questions you may be able to answer.

I am heading to coughet over the new year and am about to book accommodation. Have noticed the most hotels have a compulsory New Years Eve gala dinner (usually quite expensive). Has anybody experienced this and can you request not to be involved (i.e. not pay)?

Also can anybody recommend a good hotel (about 3 ***) that is not right in the middle of the Patong action but within an easy walk. Any help would be appreciated - you can email me on [email protected]

Thanks

Lackie

It is very common for coughet hotels to enforce a compulsory New Years Eve dinner at very high prices, plus accommodation costs at this peak period are at their highest.
In my experience it was hard to avoid the dinner charge at any hotel that levied it, though after the tsunami business may not be as good, so you might be more lucky.
Used to stay at Royal Paradise Hotel in Patong, so no suggestions re your hotel at this time.

My favourite at Patong is the Impiana Cabana. It is expensive though (by comparisson) however is very good.

Unfortunatley getting out of the NYE dinner may be difficult at any tourist class or above resort :(

The Christmas Eve, New Year's Eve, Chinese New Year and Sonkran "gala" dinners are a way for some hotels to make extra money. It is compulsory and cannot be avoided. One New Year's Eve I booked a room for 2 people with only me staying in the room and got charged the gala dinner twice. It happens in major resort locations, coughet, Pattaya, Koh Samui etc in Thailand but not every hotel has it. Look around and stay in a place that does not have a gala dinner.

I stayed in Sunset Beach Resort in north Patong, away from the noise, in 2003. Very picturesque resort but not sure what it is like now after tsunami.
