Couldn't find the info on QF site (maybe I didn't look hard enough?)

But what happens if I have a confirmed upgrade (Domestic) then I have to change my flight to another day? Does the upgrade come across if there is availability or do they refund the points or even worse do they not refund the points?

From the FF T&Cs:

16.1.9 If the Member cancels a confirmed Flight Upgrade within 24 hours of scheduled departure, or fails to board a flight for which a Flight Upgrade has been confirmed (no-show), the Member will forfeit the Flight Upgrade and any Points used to redeem the Flight Upgrade, and a seat may no longer be available in the class of travel originally purchased. If the Member cancels a confirmed Flight Upgrade more than 24 hours before scheduled departure, the Flight Upgrade may be refunded and will incur a Refund of Unused Flight Upgrade Fee (see the Fee Schedule).

I believe the current fee is 5,000 points. I cannot see where the upgrade is transferable between flights, and I would not think (but do not know) that would be the case, as there may be no 'U' inventory available on the new flight. I suspect you would need to re-apply for an upgrade on the new flight.

On reflection, this may not exactly mirror your situation, but I still suspect the upgrade would not carry across. Given you are changing the flight (and presumable paying a fee to do so) then I don't know if the upgrade cancellation fee would apply.

Yeah I saw that, but it talks about cancelling or no showing for an upgrade. I don't want to do either, just want to move to the same flight a day later and hopefully keep the upgrade or if no seats available then refund the points and put me back in Y...?

In practice if you can find U class on a differently timed/dated flight for the same route, depending on the Agent you speak to, you MAY be able to change.

YMMV

Thanks serfty, and what if there is no U class? Do they refund the points and put you back to Y or do they refund the points minus the 5,000 and put you back to Y etc??

Can't answer that one ... never done it (The only time I have changed I has pre-identified U class).

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Did this for a ZNE-PER a few weeks ago. Booked in a Y seat and upgraded via points.

Needed to change so the QFF rep had to search for the original fare bucket on the new flight. Once it was established that was available she moved me over and then checked on the J upgrade availability which was also fine.

She did say I would've got my points back if the upgrade wasn't available. Hope that helps.

Same for me. 2 weeks ago I had to change dates for a MEL-PER flight on which I already had a confirmed upgrade. The Qantas rep made sure that the new flight could be upgraded. She asked me for my PIN and did the upgrade request herself. No points penalty in the process.

Thanks, so it sounds like if there is U on the new flight then no problem. But if no U on the new flight then ?? Hopefully someone else who has had this experience can chip in.

The reason I ask is i want to upgrade a flight I have in a few weeks but there is a good chance the dates may change at the last minute. If it's going to cost me 5,000 points then I'll just hold off on the upgrade until I'm at the lounge and take my chances there...

I recently changed a flight with a confirmed upgrade, no upgrade available at the time of the change, credited my points minus the 5,000 cancellation. Upgrade confirmed again closer to flight time and paid full points again so cost an extra 5,000 points.

Thanks Jkyn,

So I guess if there is a good chance you will have to move flights it's not worth putting in an upgrade.... cheers everyone.
