Hi all,

Have an upcoming PER-LAX return via MEL in April in PE class. Am a SG holder. Wondering if I should submit a upgrade to J request for all legs or whether there's a good chance of ac comp upgrade to J particularly for the long haul legs? Are the J class typically filled and comp upgrades are rare and far between?

Any advise will be appreciated.

Thanks,

I doubt a comp upgrade from MEL to LAX and definitely doubt PER to MEL. Hate to be the bearer of bad news but as a QFF Gold you have a low-medium chance there will be an upgrade (with points) from premium economy to business.

Cheers. Wow, even points upgrade are unlikely? Thought there might at least be a chance of that.

Qantas rarely comps up even high status flyers.

The only times I have ever been comp upgraded to J is because the lower class fares (that I had also booked into) had been oversold)

They would rather an empty business class seat over an empty premium economy seat or economy seat... unless an occupant has bid to burn some points and upgrade.
Check seatguru to see how may seat are left in the class you want to upgrade into.

As a gold you come down the pecking list after Chairman's Lounge, Platinum 1 and platinum members. Any of those status holders can request an upgrade, even 'last minute', and they will trump your upgrade request which might have been there for months.

While there are 'at gate' upgrades now to increase your chances of getting an upgrade in the event of spare seats, this doesn't mean all spare seats will be allocated.

I am a QF SG, and in 20 years, have only got an op up once, as Y was fully booked and plane was stuffed full with students coming back from a sports comp.
Very short flight, MEL - ADL, and had just made SG at the time of the op up.
The seat being empty next to me in Y has been more of the norm, as a SG, both within Aust and also on my trips to NZ.

Sorry, how do I do that? I've been under the impression that I can only look at seat map on seatguru. Which doesn't even show up for QF94.

Even if you can see how many seats are left it really isn't a good indicator of upgrade availability. The 'remaining seats' won't show account for upgrade requests above yours, and don't account for 'oversell' seats (the number of seats the airline is willing to oversell in the case of no shows).

A flight could show 'J3' (3 full fare business class seats available) but actually be full.

I'm incredibly sorry. I meant to say expertflyer.
If you give a range of flights your looking for I might be able to look for you? I don't meant to pry though.

That's true. A friend who was a QF WP flew Y to UK and back and only got comp on the PER-SIN leg.

What is "at the gate upgrades and how do I get in line for that? Is that literally a request at the gates only?

No - it's just the usual request which if it isn't granted in advance still keeps you in the running right until departure time. I think you have to select the 'airport upgrade' button during the general upgrade request process.

Gotcha thanks.

it depends whether you are flying mid week or not. My kids have got upgrades to and from the USA with points and silver status mid week, but the more in demand days they don't. Doesn't do any harm to put in requests, but don't expect anything and then be happy if it happens.

Chances of a comp upgrade on MEL/SYD-LAX? Unlikely.. even for a P1. I sure as heck wouldn't count on it as a real chance.

Chance for a Gold for PE->J? possible. I know a number who have had success in recent times. It all depends on the specific flight bookings and other higher status pax ahead on the list vs booked in J, and J->F upgrades. Being in PE will be a leg up on Y upgrades(usually) so that's a fair chance.

I'd say without any flight details or thoughts, but for April, assuming non easter/hols, A 50/50 chance to get a seat in J using points. Forget the notion of an op up though IMHO.

.
Sorry for the slight derail, but does the usually refer to a high tiered passenger in Y taking precedence over a lower tiered passenger in PE? That is WP in Y come before a PS in PE?

It's been awhile since I've seen any kind of reference claiming to reflect the actual process, but I do think fare types come into it. eg: Someone on a full Y ticket may well trump a sale PE fare.

At the end of the day one would neve rknow - either you get it or you don't. You can't know the break down of those given upgrades in terms of fares, status etc.

that's my opinion of course
