Last time I flew MEL to YVR via LAX (United Airlines), I had to collect my luggage at LAX then schlep it to another terminal to check in for the LAX to YVR leg.

I'm flying in a few weeks and for the life of me, can't remebember how I found out about picking up my bags etc. Flying UA MEL to LAX then AC LAX to YVR, all on the one ticket (as was the previous flight).

How do I find out?

Not exactly sure what you mean... but as there is no "transit" as we know it at LAX you WILL need to pick your bags up, and clear Customs/Immigration. Given it is one ticket the bags should be TAGGED all the way..which will allow you to hand them over at the bag drop facility just outside Customs... rather then "schlepping to another terminal" (good word that!)

Will have about three hours to kill before ongoing flight (arrive at 9.25am, dep 12.14pm, provided there are no flight changes). Last time I rushed to get my connecting flight, so at least now I can take my time and have a sticky beak around TBIT and see what improvements they have made. There was a lot of construction when I last visited in 2017.

It seems like UA and AC don't interline, or at least don't have a transfer desk at TBIT to handle the bag transfer. In that case schlepping it appears to be the only option. Whatever, you always need to collect your bag at first port of entry to LOTFAP.

Inconsistent experience in the US this week and wonder why it is.

I flew DL - Cancun - SYD, via LAX. I had to clear my bag in LAX and recheck it (and had done the same on the way in).

Friend flew Cancun - SYD, via DFW. Was on AA then QF. Was not required to clear their bag in DFW and recheck, yet on the way over they did have to clear it in DFW before continuing to Cancun.

Bit confused as to why not the same.

I think there are a small number of major airports in the US that DO have "Transit" between International flights..... it's just not very common. Why that only worked one way I have no idea!
