I have two kittens coming down from Brisbane via a standard domestic flight to Melbourne. Does anyone know if I would pick them up via a special freight area, or would it just be the special baggage area inside the terminal?

I believe most airlines make you collect pets from the freight area.

Virgin Blue have the following page:
Virgin Blue > Pet Check-in Locations

which says the following for accompanied pet pickup/drop-off for MEL:

Melbourne 03 8346 0370 Address: Toll Dnata Building - Service Road, Melbourne Airport

Directions: As you take the Airport Exit - turn left at the lights. Turn your first right into Depot Drive. If you follow this road you will arrive at the Patrick Building

and BNE:
Brisbane 07 3114 7091 Address: Toll Air Services, Chloris St, Brisbane Airport

Directions: Heading towards the Airport down Airport Drive turn right into Chloris Street.

If the pets are flying unaccompanied, then they are dealt with by Toll Freight (Rather than Virgin Blue directly), but I assume that the same drop-off and pickup locations are used.

They are alone - moving from Brisbane to Melbourne to live with me! Thanks for the info - much appreciated!
