My home building insurance is up for renewal and i wasn't too happy with the renewal amount that Budget Direct wanted to charge me.

I'd done a bit of shopping around and thought I'd go with Allianz.

Just checked out Coles Insurance and was surprised it was a few $ cheaper than Allianz, with the benefit of points on the purchase as well as triple points on the first $500 spent at coles each month.

I'd suggest giving them a go when ya insurance is up for renewal. They were over $300 cheaper than AAMI, and just under $300 cheaper than NRMA for me.

Coles Insurance was almost $500 cheaper for my home and contents policy compared to AAMI when I renewed last month.
I phoned AAMI to inquire whether they could match the price but they could only reduce it by around $100. So I changed insurers!

Coles Insurance is underwritten by Wesfarmers.

I thought this was worth a bump based on my own experience today :

gwilli1 : NRMA will you price match a comparative competitor quotes for my Home Contents & Comprehensive Car insurance ?
NRMA : No we cant match that . What would you like to do ?
gwilli1 : Cancel my policies .
NRMA : OK , Cancelled.
Result - Saving a combined $400+/year by going with Coles/ Wesfarmers Insurance . Too easy. NRMA just lost over $1000 a year in a 2 min phone call... I wonder how many times that happens in a day ? Glad its not my business.

Wish i had done something earlier.

We have been using Budget Direct for nearly a decade.

The car insurance is due for renewal soon and I did a quote for comparison on Coles for a similar policy and the FlyBuys one was over $35 or 10% cheaper than last year's BD premium.

Coles is awesome; been with them for a few years and they can be up to half the price of others. And easy to deal with if you need to make a claim (and no hassle to cancel claim when other person opts to pay for the damage).

Received my Budget Direct renewal for July - it was showing an increase of 8% in total premium to be paid.

Checked Coles Car insurance, and without even invoking their "Price Beat", the quote was 22% less - A difference of over $100. Moreover the excess was $50 less and the Coles policy far less restrictive in general (Designated Drivers, over 40yo etc.).

Called BD and the best they could do was still $5 more than Coles' Quote and of course the bonus FB points etc. would not be available (maybe worth another $25 PA).

So Wesfarmer's, here I come ...

So Budget Direct must be paying their IT bloke's far too much :p

Gave Coles a ring in April to get a quote for home/contents. Try about double my then insurer!
So I rang Shannons and the quoted price is about one third that quoted by Coles and about 2 thirds of my renewal from current insurer. So I went with Shannons. And the news gets better still. They were happy to charge my CC each month so I get some points and when I insured Mrs Buzzards car this May they dropped my future premiums by 10%. I think I get more discount if I insure my bike with them when it comes up in November.

Shannons will ask if you are a "motor" enthusiast (which I very much am) but you can just tell them that you like F1 or something even if you don't.

So instead of paying Coles over $6,000 for home + contents I only pay about $2,000. Could not be happier. :p

It's a shame they don't insure properties rented to tenants!

Contents insurance seems cheap though.

Ah. Up to this post I had my hand on the phone to call Coles. Had my rental property H&C insurance go up 40% the past 2 years, ready to change.

Why wouldn't you just get a quote on their website? That's how I found out they don't insure rental properties! Very annoying though - they ask half way through if it's rented, then let you answer all the remaining questions before telling you they don't insure rental properties! Maybe they just didn't like where mine is?

So I did. Yes the "I don't occupy the house" question is about the third one. It then asked what type of business (answered Accommodation). The go through all the rest, only to be rejected at the end.

This on-line form recalculates things on the fly - its not a 'dumb form'. So they could reject you as soon as you say its for rental accommodation. But they don't. Its an information harvesting process.

I'm a sucker. But they will hear from me tomorrow!!

Hadn't thought of it from that perspective! Cheeky buggers!

Just worried what will happen next year, will they jack it back up ?
The T&C's entitle them to, however you could always go back to AAMI for a quote - I'm sure they'll be keen.

Note how BD insurance in my case were able to offer an ~20% discount on the renewal premium in order to try to keep my business.

That really surprises me.

If they were paying their IT bloke's too much then some of them would have retired by now and gone back to the big city. ;)

I made two small at fault claims on my BD car policy within 12 months. 1 previous claim 5yr before that. I was told by BD I needed to leave and find a different insurer or they would deny me insurance. It was hard and expensive finding another insurer to take me with the recent claims (I ended up putting the car in my partner's name) but it would have been almost impossible had they actually kicked me out, as one of the questions insurers ask is "have you ever been denied insurance"... So just be wary of low cost car insurance if your history is anything other than spotless
