Classic Reward and Flow Forwarding

Hi All,

Just a question around flow forwarding and whether it applies for Classic Reward bookings.

We have a international to domestic connection (final sector of the booking) in J from Sydney to Melbourne with a 3.5 hour layover. Does flow forwarding apply to classic rewards? I purposely built a buffer but would suspect it isn’t needed and would be nice to get home earlier if possible.

i.e. Could we request to move to an earlier flight at the Sydney transfer check in given we have to re-check our bags? Or does being on a classic reward exclude us from that possibility?

Thanks in advance!

Do you have any status.

I flew back from the USA to Adelaide via Sydney once and they changed my flight to an earlier one without any hassles but I was in J and I was either WP or SG then

They have the ability to do this and often will be proactive at the SYD T1 transfer facility.

It won't hurt to politely ask if they do not offer.

At SYD I have found the most effective way to get an earlier flight is to schlep myself and bags over to domestic on the train before asking for the earlier flight. At the int terminal they sometimes say no purely on the basis that they have decided your bags won't make the flight. But if you and bags are already at domestic, the baggage cutoff time is shorter.

I agree having status helps.

Flow forward, if activated, applies to all bookings regardless of type.

Flow forward has a different meaning to simply asking for an earlier flight. It's when airlines (usually for operational reasons) want to move passengers onto earlier flights and get them away.
This.

there's a pax request to get on an earlier flight than ticketed, and then there's flow forwarding, which is the airline proactively working to avoid known events like weather or other issues. When it's the airline's choice, then the usual rules go out thewindow and probably will get moved if you need.

if it's a pax request well then it's up to the agents. as others have said SYD T1 transfer check in have, usually, the ability and willingness to do this kind of thing and I've always found them super accommodating (but yes, higher status helps absolutely). They can be pretty flexible.

Isn’t this an extended version of what I said? Were you taking issue with my post?

no not at all - and you're right). I was just agreeing and backing you up (but possibly seems like an excuse for another post... but not intentional :) ).

anyway to add some hopefully more useful opinion content - I think the T1 transfer desk would be better for this than going to dom check in personally imo - I reckon they have far more experience and possibly ability to be more proactive in these situations (and very common for them to deal with on a daily basis).

We were supposed to have a ~9hr stopover in SYD while going HND-SYD (JAL) then SYD-CBR (QF) last week as the last part of an OWA (mainly thanks to a year's worth of schedule and metal changes from QF, and us just accepting them to try and avoid losing QR flights).

Got in about 6am, went to the QF domestic transfer desk at about 7am and asked if they could get us on anything earlier, and they put us on an 8am flight to CBR.

FWIW my wife has gold status, I have none.

Agree 100%. I think there’s always a much higher change of moving to an earlier flight at the T1 transfer desk. Only catch is the minimum 1 hour drop off.

Well IME (as opposed to IMO) I have in the past been denied an earlier flight at T1 so left the line with bag, schlepped around to domestic and guess what, request for earlier flight granted.
