Has anyone done this before?

It's probably too late. I returned in April this year, with policy covering me till May due to a death in immediate family. I paid for flights etc myself,
but someone reminded me I could have claimed this on travel insurance.

I know the website says I must do the claim form within 30 days, but PDS does not give a time frame. Does anyone know what this is?

And is it worth persuing? Sure I'd like some money back but I don't want to upset family to get death certificate etc

It is worth calling the insurance company and seeing what they say.

If you have not claimed within the requisite time , then you may well find that they will decline to pay out. If they will waive the 30 day limit , then you will likely need to provide the evidence to substantiate the claim

How much were the fees incurred to return early; the policy may only cover you for the additional expenses incurred in returning early ( minus any excess ) so if the out of pocket expenses were not very much, I wouldn't spend too much time pursuing it if this is the case

Might call them up tomorrow then Dave, I was seeking return airfares, but I only purchased a one way back home after I found out. I did not have a return ticket home as I was on a visa

Not claiming any out of pocket, just the airfares ...

I would check the policy to see whether it would cover a r/t to Oz before calling since just returning to Australia may well not pay out since no additional costs were incurred

My experience is that insurance may cover curtailment in this situation to cover costs incurred due to items already purchased... e.g. could cover change fees but if travel had been on a ow ticket would not cover the purchase of a flight back since it was not an additional cost incurred

If such a purchase would be covered, then worth calling the insurance company ... nothing to lose in asking

The insurance company has been very helpful and advised to put in a claim for consideration.

Dave, they said I was also eligible for resumption of trip, if not the trip back home as I did go back after things settled down a bit ..

They also said the 30 days was a guideline, and that you have more time to put it in, but didn't say how much time. Sooner, the better, of course ...

Thanks for your advice to ring up ... the worst they can do is say no.
