I've got some tickets to London booked for 2011 on a Citibank Platinum card. With other offers out in the market, I'm a bit sick of Citibank. If I cancel the card will the insurance that was part of the platinum package still be in place for tickets bought and paid for for travel next year. I'm travelling Air Asia... wonder if they'll ask to see the CC used?

Thanks
John

There may be a clause in Terms and Conditions re this, or I guess you could ask Citibank, though they may give you various answers, depending on the person.
My advice would be why take the risk of insurance being invalid if you cancel your card.
And if you were Citibank why would you extend cover to someone who had cancelled their card?

I wouldn't think it would be valid if the card was cancelled. This is where you need to sit down and look at the costs ; what will be cheaper, the annual fee or taking out an insurance policy for the trip?

If it's a balance transfer reason you were with Citibank (1.9% for 15 or 18 months I forget which), why not take advantage of a new offer & transfer the outstanding balance from Citibank to the new card but do not cancel your Citibank card until you return home.

The only thing that may happen is your annual credit card membership may be due however you could maybe negotiate for them to waive this which is easier to do when you have a nil balance on your card as you've already proved to Citibank that you can go elsewhere.

To hang on to you they might offer 3 months interest free for an existing balance new balance transfers or drop their interest rate from 20% to 9% for credit card purchases.

In the meantime I would get a PDS from the insurance company who underwrites Citibank but I would bet that you are not covered if you don't have a Citibank credit card because you are no longer a customer of theirs.

Cheers guys, thanks for your input. A lot of my disenchantment with Citibank is it's such a vanilla company. I'm so over their offshore call centre which sounds like it's based in the Phillipines. They're very happy and pleasant on the phone but like a lot of 2010 businesses the systems in place drive me mad. If you question a charge (recently a $106 on Qantas) what do they do? without telling you they cancel your existing card and card number and send you a new one. Creates all sort of havoc with existing direct debits. Buy some tickets late at night on Qantas (11pm or so). They get on the bloody phone in the middle of the night security checking a $1000 purchase

Despite all this the 1pt for Visa is still almost a class leader for Visa? Perhaps like someone whose been married for a while a new face would be nice. I'm so tempted to ditch Citibank and will at the next renewal.

Gen X and Gen y, phone companies and the like are all good @ churning. I personally can't see any loyalty or long term benefit in sticking with one certain credit card provider. So roll with the best deal I say. And if a better one comes along, churn to that!
