I'm flying MEL-CHC return next weekend - ~$190 return. Also did the same last year. Fares from SYD similar. Granted you have to book a long way in advance, but I would prefer to fly JQ.

I've done both on the SYD-AKL route and I much preferred China Airlines over Jetstar. For less than a JQ fare you get a hot meal, IFE, baggage allowance and a more comfortable seat on an A330 with a 2-4-2 config (rather than 3-3) with CI. Granted it's not nearly as good as Emirates, but saying that JQ is better is a bit of a stretch IMHO!

For that price I'd consider flying CI again.
