China TWOV questions

Have seen recently some stories on various blogs/forums regarding being refused 24-hour TWOV on a layover shorter than 24 hours (especially 8-12 hours on a same-day transit and mostly at PVG). Just to be clear, these travellers have been allowed to transit to their onward flight, but not been allowed landside and therefore unable to leave the airport.

Wondering if anyone on AFF has first-hand experience of either being allowed or denied the 24-hour TWOV at PVG on such a layover.

Not sure what to add here. The recent reports of entry to China being denied while on a short TWOV are real and there's not a lot that can be added to that to give anyone on a short transit comfort that they will be permitted entry.

Anything less than 12 hours you should expect to remain in the transit area these days. If you need to collect your bags and recheck it might work in your favour, as might a confirmed hotel reservation for a day use. There is no harm trying to gain entry, the worst they can do is turn you back. Arriving very early in the morning without a hotel might work against you (nothing to do in the city at that time).

But, this could all change tomorrow. best advice is to keep an eye on the various boards.
