Looks like China Southern will be the biggest Skyteam carrier in Australia soon, if not already.

London via China tests Qantas

I would not be surprised if they add even more frequencies in the future.

Sure they are not the premium carrier and not many AFFers will fly with them, but with their cheap prices and 2-day transit visa at CAN, I am sure a lot of people will save money and fly CZ over many others. CZ is definitely better positioned than say CA/MU to fly around Asia.

Even Guangzhou city itself has been transformed after the Asian Games and they definitely looked a lot better now than a few years ago. I would not be surprised that they will continue to transform itself and try to get people to stopover at CAN as part of their tourism drive. Tons of 5-star hotels at CAN now.

Talk about a PR piece, if they are really taking it to QF, why are they reducing their CAN-MEL frequencies over the next two months?

Good question Markis, why are they??
But to answer a question, they are not EK, or even QF yet. It's the Little things that let the Chinese carriers down. Like the toilet bag, headsets, lack of English (although EK are going down the Asian TA route). They will need also to improve there transit through China, which to say the least is a HUGE problem. Just about all the border control people have very poor English skills, and this has created problems between transit passengers and border control people, Pudong in Shanghai is the perfect example of this.
But what would be OK in Middle kingdom, is not OK in the rest of the world.
