Today I was checking in with VA at CBR heading home to Sydney in the Priority check-in line. In front of me was a lady with a rather large box but that's another question for another thread.

In front of her was a guy with a small kid (probably 5 - 7 years old). They were at the only open priority counter. The boy was going somewhere & it was the first time that the man & boy had gone through the UM procedures. It took several minutes for someone to open a second priority lane & I was the first person seen at the second counter. The staff member was doing a good job explaining what had to happen/what was happening with both the man & the child & no one seemingly had an issue. They were, however, still going after I checked in. The lady with the large box was also still being checked in (at a non priority counter) as I left for security.

Question is, is the priority check-in counters the place for UM check-in, especially for a first timer (kid and/or adult)? Can an extra counter be opened up for the UM & adult? Should this be done at the service desk?

Even with this delay, it was still quicker to use the priority line than the non priority line (I could have possibly got my rollerboard onboard the plane as HLO & avoided the lines altogether but I was in an ATR, after all).

How does the UM procedure work for boarding & at the other end? How are they looked after on the plane?

As someone who won't be needing to ship a UM anywhere any time soon, I'm curious.
