I had hoped to find an answer to this question on the Virgin web site but oddly enough it doesn't seem to be there. My first experience of flying with Virgin in 6 years is fast approaching!

I'm embarking on the Virgin Discover Gold status challenge and have a flight ex Melbourne on Tuesday. I believe that check-in via the staffed desks is not available until 90 minutes before take off, but I can't find any info about using the self-check-in kiosks in the terminal (I assume they have them ;) ). Could somebody tell me please if it's possible to check in say 2 or 3 hours before flight departure using these self-service kiosks? Thanks.

From pre-covid experience at PER T1 arriving early morning the regular(red) bag drops would all say "check in opens at XX:XXam" and not accept baggage if there really early - I had not observed the regular kiosk operation.

However the priority (purple) kiosk allowed check in and there was always a purple priority bag drop open for self-bag drop prior to the regular bag drops becoming active.

I would predict you most likely would be able to use the priority kiosk/bag drop at MEL with your discover gold status 2 hours before, however not sure about 3 hours. When I was doing bag drop on the priority there was already VA staff around gearing up for the day. Suspect enabling the priority self-service machines are possibly one of the first things activate when staff arrive?

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Thanks. I forgot to say that I'll be travelling with hand luggage only ... presumably that makes it easier?

With hand luggage only you should be able to check in with the staff at the lounge reception, and they can print you a boarding pass.

A lot easier than trying to scour my phone trying to find an electronic boarding pass buried somewhere amongst the cough. Same applies to state government entry passes! ;)
I prefer a paper pass too. Though I will say the e-boarding pass on your phone within the VA app is super easy and probably the best integrated part of the whole IT experience with VA.

The answer is yes. MrsK and I just checked in just over 2 hours before departure time in Melbourne, using the Sell Check In terminals, and the Priority Desk was also staffed.
The Club is in use as the VA Lounge, and it's all functioning as well as the QF Lounges in Covid mode.
