Checking bags for only part of a journey

Hi All,

Does anyone know if I can check a bag for only one leg of a journey? I'm traveling cbr-per via syd. The cbr-syd leg is on a dash 8, so only one piece of carry on allowed up to 105cm, the rest is on a service that allows two 105cm pieces. I travel with a laptop bag and a wheel-aboard.

Baggage collection at per can be pretty average, so if I could collect my bag at Sydney, go back through security then carry it onto the syd-per flight, that would be a better arrangement.

Alternatively, what are the odds of Qantas making a big deal out of a second, small carry on item on the dash service?

Thanks,

JtK

I know that on the QantasLink Dash8/Q400 regional flights throughout QLD that they allow one piece of hand luggage to take onboard but they will also take one at the gate and put a premium hand luggage tag on it which goes in the hold for that flight to be retrieved when you get off that flight which would enable you to then take it onboard your SYD/PER flight as your second piece of hand luggage.

Maybe someone here on AFF could verify that this policy is also in place on the CBR/SYD sectors.

Thanks Oz. Do you just roll up to the gate and give them the 'excess' bag at that point? I'm assuming you don't wait until boarding.

I haven't actually seen the process in action however it wouldn't do any harm to approach the staff at the gate prior to boarding & they can let you know.

This is a very nice thing to do, usually what happens is during boarding people will ask for their bag to be tagged (Or staff say it won't' fit and has to be thrown in the hold) , and it usually takes 45-60 seconds for them to tag and what not. If you get 5-10pax doing this it can slow down boarding considerably.

Just take the extra bag to the gatein syd and ask it to be premium hand luggage. They will give you a tag to put on the bag, when you get to the stairs to board the dash leave it at the bottom. There will likely be other bags down there already, or a baggage handler will tke you bag off you just prior to boarding.

On arrival into CBR make sure you get the premium tagged bag as soon as you exit the aircraft...

I've flown a few 'puddle-jumpers' both in AU and US.
Typically if they think it won't fit overhead or underseat they'll tag it (quickly) at the foot of the stairs; you go up, the hand luggage goes sideways.
Depending on the aircraft and location, you either pick up your luggage at the foot of the stairs or inside the terminal.
No big issue (IMHO).

Thanks everyone, looks like tagging at the gate/ aircraft is the go. I will note that its only because of your birthday party, harveyk, that I have to lower myself to flying on a dash 8 service. No jet services running at conveniant times.

Just to update the original query - you can check your bags on QF for only one leg of the journey, but it takes a lot of extra time at check-in. I went BNE-SYD-LAX a few months ago and was able to check one bag for the first leg and everything else through to LAX. It was a bit of work for the staff but they managed it in about 25 minutes.

If we had a full flight DIL/DRW ie 36 pax it was a bit of a challenge accommodating hand luggage on a Dash8 100 series. If you had personnel from an Aviation Regiment they had flying helmets in a soft khaki bag that they obviously didn't want to checkin as they could've been easily damaged.

I used to put them in the forward wardrobe opposite the WC. Sometimes if there wasn't enough room there due to the empty steel catering boxes I would open the door on the rear bulkhead & they would fit snugly between the bulkhead & the luggage which was tied down with a tarp so it wouldn't shift.

If we only had the a/c config at 20 pax to allow for more freight there was just enough space to put the helmets behind the seats in row 5ABCD against the bulkhead.

And your sacrifice is much appreciated... :D
Just think about the fifteen odd beers you'll be having that night which will help drown out the horrible experience which is the dash 8... :D

This was just due to a system upgrade, which caused issues with short-tagging, it wouldn't really allow it it happen with out going through a 30 step process..
Altea CM has now been updated and short-tagging is a simple 2 step process again!

A right PITA that was. It's not like you wanted one bag shortagged somewhere & the other one somewhere else, it was when you wanted luggage shortagged even when all bags were going to the same place
