If it was my thinking ditching a side trip costing $1000 was a possibility I'd want to at least make sure it is mostly refundable.

The KUP ticket is non refundable but I think it can be changed/reissued for US$100 for up to a year after the original ticket. Just means another trip back to the US to redeem.

My thinking is that the side trip is a strong possibility, probably definite, and I should not be deterred just in case an event beyond my control puts me on the sidelines for any length of time. If this was the case then we should not be booking any travel that was not on the same ticket as there is always a risk you will miss onward flights. With the age of the internet frequent flyers have become smarter, not needing travel agents, and most travel is on various carriers on separate tickets trying to get the best airfare possible.

If you are flying MEL-AKL on QF25 then that is the same a/c that continues to LAX. If you are flying MEL-AKL on QF39 then you arrive around midnight and continue on to LAX next day (or later) on different a/c.

It is definitely QF25. I got confused by CheckMyTrip.
