Checked baggage size

The QF website says that checked baggage on domestic is limited to a dimension of 140cm per piece and 158cm per piece on international. Every one of my regular cases is bigger than these measurements and I have never been pulled up on it, so why have this silly size guideline. Even if you ask QF they tell you that they don't enforce it. Has anyone else here ever had a problem with an oversized bag on a jet service...assuming you weren't trying to check in a Steamer trunk :!:
 
I've never had anyone measure any bag of mine.

But it could happen. All it takes is a smart @ss agent who has a bad day to take out the tape measure and check against the standards.

Obviously if you're bag is way too big they may pick it up themselves when it doesn't fit into the baggage dropoff area, or it looks like 2m squared!
