Has anyone been able to get VA to look up and provide some forms of evidence of check in time.

Need it to prove I wasn'tdriving a rental car at a certain time.

How did you get to the airport? If Uber then your trip history will prove when you got there.

Drove hire car to airport and checked in at 3.20pm. Hertz have said I was driving at 4.15pm.

Did you enter the lounge, that might be on record. What about social media posts or time stamped photos?

Are boarding passes time stamped?

Video entering the garage...

SMS from Telstra about going overseas that is geo-fenced when entering airport?

Burden of proof on Hertz that you were driving vs. you proving you weren't?

Social media slam? :)

To note that many times I've parked at an airport, then checked-in, then returned the rental car.

So while the check-in time might help, it might not be solid proof.

A petrol refill credit card timestamp?

I gather the flight was sometime after 4.15? So you couldn’t say the flight had already left....

Unfortunately won't help you much. But nowadays I do a walkaround and take several photos (inside and out) when I return rental cars especially if it is a key drop and there is no one around to take delivery. Sure, photos and their timestamps can be disputed but it's much better than nothing. The CCTV suggestion sounds like a good one. Can you dispute the charge on your credit card and put it back in the rental company's court?

Benefit of hindsight but I generally won't leave until they have closed the rental off and printed me the receipt. I've had rental companies try to hit me with extra charges in the past.

If you can say, does this relate to a speeding/traffic offence? There are different ways to dispute that than some civil thing that Hertz may be trying on.....

There is absolutely a record in SABRE of events relating to the ticket such as check in time, boarding pass print, etc.

However it's presented as a bunch of random text on a screen iirc so even if somehow you got VA to provide it to you, I'm not sure it would prove much.

From memory it is also all in UTC.

I can’t help but in Adelaide airport we saw a group of cars travelling together from the airport road turning Left. Most cars need to turn right towards the city. They were driving like maniacs. Mounting kerbs. Driving on kerbs etc. As we need to turn left too we followed them and sure enough a km or so down the road they veered sharply into a rental car depot. Their driving would have damaged the tyres and they were a menace. And each of them (maybe 5) drove the same way. They were just returned rental cars being driven back by their employees. I wonder if that’s what happened with you. And just maybe there is an internal record of them being taken into their other depot.

Hertz is sooooooooooooooooo terrible. I have actually been banned form Hertz for life. True story. Similar thing... they randomly charged my credit card for something I didn't do - I wrote them an email to their customer "care" line enquiring about it... they never replied.... so I disputed the charge with AMEX.... Hertz never replied to AMEX either... so AMEX reversed the charge (as is policy).... 6 months later get a call from a debt collector chasing up this unpaid Hertz bill (can you believe the nerve???) I referred it to the Ombudsman... never heard about it again. But this is Hertz's MO - they won't communicate with you, then just sell off the debt. There is pages of stuff written about this all over the internet on various forums. Hertz is total rubbish. Once (before this incident), they took soooooooooooooooooooooooooo long to check my car in at MEL that I became late! It is true. I was sitting in my car in the return queue for 45 mins before the guy finally scanned the barcode in the windscreen - and then added an extra day rental because i was past the grace period. They did of course adjust that, but the systems they have in place are so flawed you have to be careful. Anyway, I went to rent a car from hertz a few years back and the guy said the note against my name said "DO NOT RENT - BANNED FOR LIFE". Instead i just rent from Avis.

Did you purchase anything on your credit card at the airport? That transaction would be date and time stamped and you could probably get easily enough from your bank/CC provider.

You may also be able to contact your mobile phone carrier who would probably hold records of your movements with regard to which tower(s) your phone pinged (and presumably accessible under FOI if not willingly given up).

Your post probably needs more information in order for others to provide meaningful advice.

At what location was this? What was the return process? On return, was there a Hertz representative to check and receive it. Rental receipt - where is it? With Hertz, these seem to be emailed shortly after the return, as a matter of course. Certainly in SYD and BNE they are not printed at the point of return.

In any case, I don’t see how this has anything to do with VA.

Edit: Sorry that I cannot help further, but you need to follow-up on the receipt. Perhaps the vehicle was not properly returned/checked in and the records show that it was still in your possession.

Was it at some place where there’s no-one to actually receive it and you did a key drop? Did you leave the keys in the vehicle and walk away, potentially allowing someone else to drive it?

Also, what prompted your concerns? How did you discover that there is a problem? More information is needed.

Hope that the OP hasn’t come to grief with Hertz. No feedback as yet?

Edit: Plenty of suggestions/advice offered, above
