I was wanting to book a return flight from Sydney to Singapore in business class using Velocity points.

From what I can see, it will cost 130,000 velocity points + $147.53 AUD if I book via Virgin.

It will cost 93,500 Krisflyer miles + $480.04 AUD through Singapore Airlines (assuming it is booked before the price changes later this month) and I believe this is after the 15% online discount (normally 110,000 miles).

It costs 1.35 Velocity points per Krisflyer miles so 93,500 miles will cost 126,225 Velocity points. That leaves $332.51 in cash difference for only 3,775 extra Velocity points which equates to $11.35/point.

Given it's easier to not have to wait for conversion, am I missing anything in booking straight from the Velocity page?

There is no 'waiting for conversion' the transfers are instant in my experience.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

We transferred points from from VFF to KF last week and the points were in transferred within the time it took me to log into the SQ site to check (under 5 minutes) [Disclaimer: I have previously transferred points from VFF to KF]

Hmm, my calculator says 3,775 points at a cost of $332.51 = $0.0881 per point.

Sorry, you are right, was in a rush. My point was that it's a very effective use of points rather than paying more cash (8.81c is well above the average cost of acquiring Velocity points - even paying the ATO).

Even if points transfers are instant, is it not still cheaper to book the same flight using Velocity points?

Yes, most definitely. While I'm sure there are certain circumstances which would be better, whenever I've reviewed transferring to KF the fees have always made it a more expensive option.

Have just done this myself but in reverse :

SQ 126,225 plus $441.75
VA 130,000 plus $123.83

I opted for the VA route - as I'd rather spend a few extra points to save $318

Watch out as from March 21 (I think) the SQ points rates increase and the online discount goes - hopefully VA won't increase points rates too (though I fear its likely they will at some point)

I too opted to go through the VA route when redeeming a Singapore-Sydney ticket. The difference in taxes was more than $150 and the difference in points was not so much.
Back then there were issues with making changes to the SQ reservation because it was booked through Velocity, but that's since been fixed and I can change seats, order 'Book the Cook' and more seamlessly through the SQ app and website.
