If you flying at least once per year to Europe it is much cheaper to buy tickets in reverse direction. Typically a business class ticket MEL-EU(say CDG, FRA,MXP,...) costs around 7000AUD. If you buy in in reverse the price is around 4000 AUD (currently CDG-MEL flying Air India around 3500 AUD, flying Alitalia around 4000 AUD ..and so on flying Finnair, Air Berlin, ...). I am doing it for years after initially buying one way ticket to Europe (or redeeming miles..).

Nesting works on a number of routes and is not a bad idea, however buying points often will be cheaper.

It is often cheaper to buy ex Europe. I know EK used to be offering First class for well under what we could buy it for in Australia.

That being said - it is possible, with a bit of planning, to construct your own business class combination fares ex AU for around the $4000 mark - flying QF business class to Singapore and then either Sri Lankan or Air India from Singapore. Non-London is obviously a few hundred dollars cheaper.
