This is a much better value hotel than the Governor's Residence and much more our style.I booked an Executive floor king room with lake and pagoda view.Cost $250-a third the price of the Governor's.A little further from the airport. So a taxi about 1000k more. The only problem was we got a double room-

We were in time for high tea.No alcohol but a great spread with cakes, fresh fruit,Vietnamese rice paper rolls, sandwiches, spring rolls and mini quiches.
Then happy hour 1730-1930.An Argentinian chardy and cab sav both easy drinking. But again a great spread which you could easily make dinner-

So chicken wings, tempura prawns, fries, satays, salads etc. When the satays ran out they were replaced by mini crab cakes.
But saving the best until last-a great view of sunset!

Nice one. I considered that place, but it seemed a bit far away walk-wise from the main sights (but of course you had already done sights in previous hotel).

Are you tempted by a swim to Ang Sun Suu Kyi's place, which is directly south of your hotel, on the other side of the lake? (Reference to the idiot who swum there a number of years ago when she was under house arrest, causing her to break house arrest!!)

Very close to the Aung Sun museum and we walked back from Shwedagon Pagoda today.
I forgot to mention that at 1100 they have a free shuttle to Scott's market via the pagoda so that is what we took this morning.Tomorrow I will get it to the markets and then walk the old town.If feeling up to it I will walk around the lake after that.
No way I would swim-the water doesn't look particularly clean.

Hasten to add I was commenting from my fitness perspective, not yours, re distance to walk :D (and it was bloody hot).

What did you think of Scott's Market? I was rather disappointed. Lots of same-same, I thought, especially too-expensive jewellery.

You'll pass the Shangri-La on your way from the market to the town.

Not really a shopping destination, Myanmar. My wife was keen for me to buy a pigeon blood Ruby for her until I enlightened her as to how much they cost (and even then not be 100% confident they are real).

I agree the Scott's market is a real disappointment.
With mrsdrron's ruby ring we went with our guide in Bagan. His grandparents owned ruby mines and they still live in Bagan. This was the recommended jeweller and it was a fixed price though everyone basically got 10% off with a little extra for cash.

Rubies,sapphire,silverware,gold leaf,silk and lacquerware.
Who said it was bad for shopping?
Visa has been stopped.Email from bank giving number to ring reverse charges-trouble is so far no one knows what that means.
I say it means I have to call the International operator-what is their number?Just a blank look in reply.
MasterCard still Ok.
