Changing Class of Award Booking

I've been following the release of Etihad awards for a little while, and it seems the F seats are released a couple of weeks behind the J ones. Has anybody booked a J award, and then changed it to F once available? Is it simple enough to do (I've read some customer service horror stories)? Any miles/cash charges for doing so? I only see cancellation and date change fees listed on the website.

I have to J awards booked for July Mel to London but these were booked on AA miles....I am interested in changing the dates but not the class but there seems to be nothing else around. Where are you checking the availability on Etihad ?
