Hi all,

Can't definitively find an answer to this so would appreciate some clarification. I will be travelling more with work and for leisure over the next two years and would like to move from my current lowly Bronze status to Gold if possible to enjoy the associated privileges.

My status anniversary date is 31 May and I already have a status run booked for early June, work trips from June-Oct (DOM Y) and a JASA to LHR in Feb 14. All these combined would give me enough SCs to get close to Gold. I am considering another JASA status run later this year if it will tip me over. However, assuming I do this and I get to Gold post my UK trip in Feb, when will I revert to Silver? Is it 31 May 2014 or 31 May 2015 or some other date? I wouldn't expect to retain Gold but will likely have enough SC's to stay at Silver in 2014-2015.

From the QF website;

You will retain any new status for at least 12 months. At the end of your membership year, your Status credits will be reset to zero. Provided you continue to earn the required number of Status credits each year and complete the minimum of four eligible flights, and take at least four eligible Qantas, QantasLink or Jetstar flights in that membership year, your membership status and privileges will remain at your acquired level.

Clear as mud to me! Appreciate your input!

Thanks.

In a nutshell, whatever status you attain in your current year, you will keep for the following year even though your status credits revert to zero on June 1st.
ie. If you attain Silver or Gold a month before your year ends - you will be Silver or Gold for 13 months.

If you attain Gold in February - you will have gold for at least 15 months (Feb-May in the year you qualify, then 12 months - the next full year). You will only drop back to Silver or Bronze if you don't get enough SC's to re-qualify in that next year. The first sentence you quoted from the Qantas website refers to this.

Have fun!

Thanks very much! That's great, I will definitely be looking to maximise my chances of going to Gold sooner rather than later in that case as I have a few holidays planned for the next 2 years and the offerings of Gold appeal!

Thanks again.

Don't forget you need fewer SCs to requalify once a given level has been achieved. For SG it's 700 the first time but only 600 to requalify the next year.

Looking forward to seeing you more often. :)

My understanding is that QF have a so called soft drop. Gold will drop to silver even if you not get enough SC's for silver. Then the next year silver to bronze. That's how I dropped from Platinum to bronze

QF certainly do have a soft landing - although it is not documented anywhere.

My advice though would be to think very clearly about your decisions and status runs. With a May qualification period are you able to push your JASAs into June or beyond? That way if you can get status after May you will retain it until 2015. It obviously depends on how close you are now - but if you are doing a JASA then you have lounge access and most of the benefits of gold already. In fact more benefits as you get J lounge domestically and SG only gets QP.
