From Travel Today:

Japan Airlines plans to increasingly target high end travellers after last night
launching its new shell flat seat for the Sydney-Tokyo route.
Available from October 28, the shell flat configuration will see capacity in executive class boosted from 74 to 89 seats in the Boeing 747-400. The seat reclines to 170 degrees and is 190cm long, and also includes an in-built
massage function and power outlet for laptops.

Good news :)
That is without actually trying the new J seats (only ever the older ones) so i assume they are good.

I think it's great news, it was the only negative pt flying JAL J was their old seat, will be nice to get through to London or NY with the new seats all the way.

TG

This IS good news. I have been keen to fly JL to NRT as part of a DONE4 but am put off by the awful seating on JL.

Nothing on the JAL website.

Are they referrent to the JAL Shell Flat
or the
JAL Shell Flat Neo which is scheduled to go to JFK and SFO in Aug/ Sep 2008.
I suspect it may mean that the Shell Flat planes are getting rerouted to Sydney while US gets the really new planes

I suspect you may be right, no mention of the Shell Neo product, I would think they're just rerouting planes.

That was only announced last night, and it was all they published so will wait and see what else comes out

Have flown them a couple of times between BKK & NRT , and they are nice. Not that much different from Qantas seat, if memory serves correct. I certainly wouldn't avoid JL from SYD-NRT like I used to, because of the seat (although I will still try to avoid them as AA doesn't give the 100% bonus on JL, like it does on QF)

Yeah, but it's all about the seat. Any other perks are of secondary importance.

Remember there is no status bonus for AAdvantage earning for JL flights.

Sure, so if the seats are very similar, I'll go for QF as I get the bonus points.

In reality though, it usually comes down to availability, and JL usually has more D availability that QF.

Right...I should have added..."and price" :!:

On a DONEx the price has been removed from the equation.
I guess here in BNE it will still be the regional product and no directs from QF.

Good point I dont have a DONE4 planned via NRT for a while so next time I do one - I will consider whether this might a flight credited to QF.

Errr....would really like to see how they have done this. Would it mean a more cramped space or has cattle loss some room?

Do JAL offer paid on-departure ugrades?

We are taking advantage of the JMB reduced points offer and flying SYD - NRT in Jan 2009 (returning end of Feb) and it would make a very enjoyable flight each way!

Not something i've ever heard of happening in my time in the industry, so wouldn't count on it.
