Can someone please tell me the advantages and disadvantages of using Orly airport versus using Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris?

Is one significantly better or worse than the other?

Hi Straitman,

When I worked for a French company that was based quite close to Orly, I was never able to secure a flight into Orly, as all the flights I was able to take went to CDG.

I asked my French colleagues why they also didn't use Orly, and I was told they would prefer to, but all the places they needed to fly to meant leaving via CDG as well.

Not sure if that helps.

Orly is smaller, closer to Paris via Taxi (my usual method of getting into city centre).
If flying in I think I prefer Orly - less congestion cf CDG on the roads coming into Paris

If leaving, not much difference as the roads to the airports are not that busy

Airport wise - depends on your airline, lounge availability, tax refund processes etc

I would imagine it's pretty much the same as LHR vs Gatwick.

Though, mention CDG and all I can think of is the Clive James description: "A rotary milking machine with pretensions to elegance". It's pretty accurate. :)

Last trip I flew in CDG from MEL via SIN...and out of Orly to Berlin

I used the train to get to my apartment in Bastille, and it was a breeze. Internal train first, and then main trainline which went into the Metro. Quick chain and then up the stairs 300 m to my apartment.
We found arrival a breeze...and barely broke stride as we flashed our passports to go through and collect our backs with little wait.

My return to Paris was by train after a weeks cycling and we stayed in Montparnasse this time. Near arrival train station from Loire Valley, and also easy to get to Orly. We walked to the Airport Bus from our hotel as was not too far (we could have used the Metro, but was not worth it in our case). Airport Bus from this location was painless, cheap and quite quick.

Orly was efficient as an embarkation airport. We had bought cheap tickets on AirBerlin. Standrad departure lounge area was very good with good food and drink options.

Orly is the go if you can get the appropriate flights you need. Quicker to get to from Central Paris and better to use. Still a pretty big airport. I don't think there is much long haul congestion out of there, seems that things move quite rapidly, though it can handle large aircraft.

I havent flown into/out of Orly but CDG is a hole, been there a few times. Unorganised, long security lines, can be confusing to find your way around.

You can also get the metro almost right to the terminal at orly for about 2 EUR. We did it in 2011. Very cheap.
